Mooer's Stories | Insights from DividendKopi's Resilient Investment Journey Since 2008
1. Self-Introduction: Please share your trading journey. When did you start, and what sparked your interest in investing?
I began my investing journey in 2008, right before the Global Financial Crisis. I vividly remember the panic of seeing my initial investment drop by 60%. With limited resources, I had no choice but to stick to my monthly regular savings plan. Along the way, I experimented with highly speculative trading but faced multiple setbacks, including two margin calls that left me demoralized.
I almost gave up, believing the idea of making money work for me was just a dream. However, as the financial markets recovered, my losses turned into gains. When I exited my initial investment years later, I was up 40%. This experience taught me the importance of patience, staying invested in quality assets, and trusting the fundamentals. It was a transformative moment that shaped my approach to investing: focusing on long-term value rather than short-term speculation.
When Warren Buffett was asked why others don’t simply copy his investment approach, he replied, “Because nobody wants to get rich slowly.” This philosophy has become my guiding motto and a constant reminder to focus on patience, discipline, and long-term growth in my investing journey.
2. Trading Style: How would you describe your trading style? Are you cautious, aggressive, or somewhere in between?
I would describe my trading style as cautious and disciplined, with a strong focus on long-term value. I prioritize quality investments and sustainable growth, guided by Warren Buffett’s philosophy of “getting rich slowly.” While I occasionally explore higher-risk opportunities to enhance potential returns, I ensure they remain a small part of a well-managed and diversified portfolio.
Effective portfolio management is central to my strategy, helping me stay aligned with my goals while thoughtfully navigating market opportunities.
I follow a balanced investment approach that aligns with my medium- to long-term goals, ensuring a mix of stability, growth, and liquidity. My allocation is structured as follows:
Mooer's Stories | Insights from DividendKopi's Resilient Investment Journey Since 2008
🪙 45% in S-REITs (Singapore Real Estate Investment Trusts): This portion is focused on generating steady, reliable dividend income. REITs provide a consistent cash flow that supports my financial stability. Some of my preferred REITs include e.g., Keppel DC REIT, CapitaLand Integrated Commercial Trust, which have demonstrated strong fundamentals and resilience over time.
🪙 45% in Equities and ETFs: This allocation targets growth opportunities across diverse sectors and geographies. I lean towards high-quality companies with solid fundamentals and ETFs that provide broad exposure to global markets, ensuring a good balance between risk and return.
🪙 10% in Money Market Funds: This is my safety net for liquidity and opportunity. It ensures that I have quick access to cash for unforeseen needs or to capitalize on investment opportunities during market corrections. This balanced strategy has worked well for me, providing regular income while allowing me to participate in long-term market growth.
3. Experience with Moomoo: What has your experience been like with Moomoo? Are there any features or improvements you would suggest?
My experience with Moomoo has been overwhelmingly positive. The user-friendly interface and access to real-time data and analysis tools have been invaluable. I particularly appreciate the community feature, which allows me to exchange insights with other investors.
One feature I rely on heavily is the ability to view charts for investments on my watchlist in a single screen. This provides a quick, comprehensive view of market sentiment—covering equities, indexes, gold prices, and more—which is essential to my holistic investment approach.
Keep up the great work, and I’m excited to see what new innovations Moomoo will deliver in the future!
4. Risk Management: How do you stay informed and manage risks while trading? What resources or strategies do you rely on?
Risk management is central to my investment strategy. I stay informed by leveraging reliable sources such as Moomoo’s real-time market data, financial news, and company reports. These tools provide a comprehensive view of market trends and enable me to make well-informed decisions.
I rely heavily on diversification to mitigate risk—spreading investments across sectors, geographies, and asset classes to ensure no single position dominates my portfolio. For instance, I balance equities with REITs and closely monitor indicators like index trends and gold prices to maintain a holistic view of the market.
Ultimately, my focus is on sustainability. I see risk as something to be managed thoughtfully, not avoided, and I trust in the fundamentals of quality investments to deliver steady, long-term growth.
5. Challenges as a Singaporean Investor: What challenges do you face when trading in US or SG markets?
As a Singaporean investor, one of the key challenges I face when trading in US markets is the 30% withholding tax on dividends, which reduces the effective yield of investments. Additionally, currency exchange rates between SGD and USD can impact overall returns, especially during periods of significant fluctuations. These are factors beyond an investor’s control, but they are important to account for when planning an investment strategy.
On the other hand, while trading in the Singapore market avoids currency and withholding tax concerns, the range of investment options is more limited compared to the US. This can make it challenging to achieve the same level of diversification or tap into certain high-growth industries.
Despite these challenges, I focus on building a balanced portfolio that leverages the strengths of both markets. For example, I rely on the Singapore market for its strong REIT offerings and consistent dividends, while the US market provides access to a broader range of equities with higher growth potential. This balanced approach helps me navigate the challenges and make the most of what each market has to offer.
