Morningstar ratings are essentially investment analysis reports of financial instruments and are in a way the same as the analyst ratings functionality that already existed, but more in-depth.

Morningstar, the company behind the ratings is an influencial US investment services firm mainly specializing in conducting investment research and management, with their recommendations and analysis recognized as being influencial over investor sentiment.

Therefore, the stars that Morningstar awards and rates stocks are seen to be similar to michilen stars in terms of marketing and public image.

I myself have used Morningstar's website for awhile when researching stocks or mutual funds, but I've always noticed that the actual analysis reports were paywalled.
