Moomoo User Midyear 2023 Investor Survey

Hey mooers,
In the first half of 2023, Fed rate hikes, recession fears, upheaval in the financial sector, and inflation have really made investors who participated in the survey concerned as the stock market has been climbing the wall of worry. In this post, we'll review how our mooers' investing journeys have progressed so far this year and their expectations for the second half. Let's look at what they have experienced and felt.
About the Survey: The Q2 Moomoo Users survey was conducted on July 17-21, 2023. The survey included 140 participants that are registered users of the moomoo app. The data shown in the survey represents the opinion of those surveyed and may change based on market and other conditions.
How are mooers generally doing?
To begin, let's look at our mooers' first half of 2023. Compared to 2022, we found that users in the survey are trading more, and a larger amount is profitable in 2023; however, their confidence levels still need to improve.
• The investor survey shows that amid the recent U.S. stock market rally, 36% of surveyed users have made money year to date in 2023 compared to only 15% in 2022, a year where the S&P 500 lost 19.4%--its worst decline since 2008.

• According to the survey, with more users making money, they are trading more than they did at the same point last year.
The S&P 500 is an unmanaged index of 500 widely held stocks. An investment cannot be made in an index. The performance mentioned does not include fees and charges, which would reduce an investor's returns.

• Despite a big market run-up during the first half of 2023, users need more confidence to help meet their investment goals; inflation remains their top concern.

How are mooers assessing their risks?
Risk assessment has always been a hot topic in investing. Deposit accounts typically yield a guaranteed return, while investments in the stock market fluctuate. However, in the spring of 2023, the large regional banks' failure shook some depositors' faith in America's banking system.
When we asked users if they thought their money was safe in a traditional bank in mid-2023, they were split on their thoughts about the safety of banks.
• While higher-income investors are more likely to have deposits at banks, lower-income users have less trust in traditional banks.
Neither Moomoo Financial Inc. nor any of its affiliates are banks. Investment products are not insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) or guaranteed by a bank, and may decline in value.

• 89% of users have multiple trading accounts, representing a possible sign that investors do not want to keep their eggs all in one basket.

Where do we go from here?
There needs to be some clarification from investors as to where the market goes from here and whether there will be a recession or not.
• Surveyed Users are much more bullish on the stock market for the rest of 2023 than at the beginning of the year.
Moomoo User Midyear 2023 Investor Survey
• Unexpectedly, at odds with a generally bullish outlook on the stock market, 45% of users think the economy is already in recession.
