July 31, 2024 at 5:55 PM GMT+9 (some excerpts)
Next month, the US government plans to announce new rules that expand the authority to prevent exports of manufacturing equipment from some foreign countries to Chinese semiconductor manufacturers. A source related to the two made it clear.
Shipments from allied countries such as Japan, the Netherlands, and South Korea are excluded, and since ASML (ASML.AS), opens new tab and Tokyo Electron (8035.T), opens new tab can continue to be shipped, the impact of the new rules is likely to be limited. Stock prices of both companies skyrocketed in response to reports.
According to one of the people involved, the new regulations expand the “foreign direct products (FDP) rules,” and about half a dozen Chinese factories, which play a central role in efforts aimed at advanced semiconductor manufacturing in China, will not be able to import from many countries.
