Why the US hasn't made more progress on climate: I wouldn't hope for much. Boomers still control the government and, because of their short-sighted greed, become uncomfortable with the idea of losing their precious oil money.
The situation worsens due to the Republicans packing the courts (lifetime appointments) with Freedom Society drones, whose stance on the global warming crisis is "nahhhh this is fine" or worse "nah that isn't happening".

Incredible, isn't it? Greed might take down humanity in the end. I had it pegged on Religion.

Our only chance is enough young Americans voting. With enough votes, they can overcome GOP gerrymandering in enough locations to gain majorities. It's the only way to get a solid majority in all 3 branches. Without it, we get what happened in 2020.
Democrats won the majority in the House and gained the executive branch. In the senate, however, we merely tied. It was the VP tie breaking vote power that gave Democrats a "majority."
That meant no single one could disagree, and unfortunately, 2 seats, 1 in Arizona and 1 in West Virginia, weren't really morally aligned.

Joe Manchin from West Virginia happens to have co-founded a company, Enerysystems, which takes coal waste from coal MINES and sells them to coal POWER PLANTS. His son is the CEO. His entire family fortune and legacy depend on burning fossil fuels. If this was not enough of a conflict of interest, His DAUGHTER runs a pharmaceutical company thst sold...you guessed it... eppi-pens! You can see why he was so against pharma bargaining and eppi-pen price caps now, ya?
The other greedy fuck was from Arizona, Krysten Sinema, whose shameless greed cost the country, among those already mentioned,  a minimum wage increase which hasn't gone up since FUCKING 2009 ( Thanks, Obama ).
Both have since become independent and will lose their re-election bids, but the damage is done.

TL;DR: We are fucked because too many Boomers are lead-poisoned with brain damage and too many are just plain selfish and want "lower taxes" (Republican tax cuts never actually improve for them meaningfully, and usually ends up costing them more, like with 2018 Tax Cuts and Jobs act)
