NVIDIA × India: A Partnership that can change India's Semiconductor game
NVIDIA’s offer to jointly develop a semiconductor chip with India isn’t just another tech headline. To me, this feels like a turning point for India’s role in global technology - and it’s something that’s been coming for a while.
⚫ Chip Shortage & Supply Chain Shifts: Globally, the semiconductor industry has faced a massive supply chain crunch, with demand outpacing production, especially for advanced AI-driven chips. Countries are now focused on diversifying their supply chains. India, with its large market and budding tech ecosystem and NVIDIA being a leader in AI-driven chip design, this partnership can really redefine India's future.🤝
⚫ The Global Semiconductor Race: Currently, Taiwan and South Korea dominate semiconductor manufacturing, manufacturing chips as small as 3nm. India, on the other hand, is more likely to begin with 28nm chips. While 28nm is not at the cutting-edge but is still crucial for automotive, defense, and IoT applications. For reference, 1 modern car requires up to 7,500 chips, underscoring the massive demand India is aiming to cater to.
While we might be behind in the race for advanced chipmaking, this partnership with NVIDIA could help us leapfrog into future technologies.🌟
⚫ PLI Scheme Boost: The Indian government has committed $900 mil under the PLI scheme to boost the Semiconductor sector of India. This financial backing is crucial, as setting up a full-fledged semiconductor ecosystem requires heavy capex. Huge investments by companies like TASL ($11B), Micron ($2.75B), etc. have already shifted India's gears in the space.💰
PS:- 20% of the world's semiconductor designing happens here in India.
While the world's second most valuable company is looking to leverage India's talent pool and the emerging tech ecosystem, this is also India's opportunity to change the global tech ecosystem. I am curious to see if India ready for this big shift or we still have a lot of ground to cover..!
