💡 Nvidia leverages existing channels to sell A800 GPUs banned in China in North America
Nvidia began reallocating the A800 originally designed for China to North America and other regions in response to the suspension of GPU shipments to China due to increased US export restrictions. The move has been introduced on Nvidia's American website as the “ultimate workstation development platform” for AI, data science, and high-performance computing.
1 ️ Export Restriction Background: In October 2022, the American government ordered Nvidia to stop selling the A100 and H100, the most powerful data center GPUs to China. In response to this, Nvidia introduced the A800 to the Chinese market and avoided export restrictions, but in 2023/10, the US government expanded export restrictions on AI chips and prohibited sales of the A800 to China.
2 ️ WS Market Impact: Demand for Nvidia's high-performance AI GPUs is high, and market analysis predicts that the AI/ML market will continue to drive server growth until 2024. Nvidia is reportedly in the process of reallocating supplies of affected AI chips, including the A800, to the US and other regions.
3 ️ š Effects of reallocation: Nvidia is reallocating A800 supplies to North America and other markets. This move could provide an opportunity to make up for losses in the Chinese market. Demand for AI and data science in the North American market continues to be high, and sales in these regions are expected to increase due to reallocation, and in the long run, Nvidia is expected to make up for losses in the Chinese market through growth and innovation in other markets.
