NVIDIA's CEO Jensen Huang Speech at Caltech 130th Commencement Address

NVIDIA's CEO Jensen Huang Speech at Caltech 130th Commencement Address
"At $NVIDIA (NVDA.US)$, our goal was to integrate GPUs into every computer, so we began integrating GPUs into motherboard chipsets. We launched a highly successful integrated graphics chip for $Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.US)$, which quickly grew from zero to a billion dollars in revenue almost overnight.

But suddenly, $Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.US)$ decided to control all PC technologies and bought ATI, leaving us unnecessary. We then turned to $Intel (INTC.US)$, not necessarily the best move, but we negotiated an agreement to link our GPUs with Intel CPUs. $Apple (AAPL.US)$ became interested in our work and requested collaboration on a new computer, which became the first MacBook Air. This upset $Intel (INTC.US)$, leading them to terminate our agreement.

We pivoted again, securing Arm's license and creating a low-power mobile chip system. $Alphabet-C (GOOG.US)$ was excited and it became the foundation for the first Android devices. However, $Qualcomm (QCOM.US)$, unhappy with our chips not connecting to their mobile network chips, blocked our entry into the mobile market. With no other options, we exited.

All these events unfolded within a year. We built remarkable things, made a huge impact, and were then ousted from these markets.

Finally, we decided to create something we were sure would have no customers. But as it turned out, if there are no customers, there are no competitors, and no one cares. We embarked on developing the first supercomputer, running an algorithm few understood back then—deep learning.

This taught us a few things. Firstly, the world is uncertain and often unfair, harsh towards you. Remember to swiftly discard these kind of matters.

Quickly shedding them is smart!"
