Nvidia shares fell 7% on Tuesday amid a broad sell-off in chipmaking stocks ahead of key Big Tech earnings reports. The company, dominant in AI processors, has dropped over 20% since briefly becoming the world's most valuable publicly traded company last month, losing nearly $750 billion in market capitalization. Other chip stocks followed suit, with Arm closing down 6% in New York.
There's a lot of angst in the market ahead of reporting," said Emmanuel Cau, head of European equity strategy at Barclays. Apple, Amazon and Meta will also be publishing their quarterly numbers later this week.
He added investors were also cautious ahead of a busy few days for central banks, with interest rate decisions by the Bank of Japan, US Federal Reserve and Bank of England all due.

Advanced Micro Devices reported second-quarter sales of $5.8 billion, up 9% year-over-year and exceeding analysts' expectations. Despite net income of $265 million missing projections, adjusted earnings of 69 cents per share beat estimates. The surge was driven by record data center revenue of $2.8 billion, doubling from the previous year due to high demand for AI chips. AMD anticipates $6.7 billion in third-quarter sales, slightly above expectations. CEO Lisa Su highlighted strong growth prospects driven by AI solutions. Following the earnings release, AMD shares rose over 7% in extended trading.

$Microsoft (MSFT.US)$ stock fell 0.89%. Its options trading volume was 0.48 million. Call contracts account for 53% of the total trading volume. The $430 calls expiring Sep. 20th were traded most actively.
Microsoft shares fell up to 7% in extended trading on Tuesday, as investors focused on disappointing cloud results despite better-than-expected earnings and revenue. The company reported earnings per share of $2.95 (vs. $2.93 expected) and revenue of $64.73 billion (vs. $64.39 billion expected) for the fiscal fourth quarter. Revenue increased 15% year-over-year, and net income rose to $22.04 billion.
For the fiscal first quarter, Microsoft forecasted revenue between $63.8 billion and $64.8 billion, slightly below analysts' expectations of $65.24 billion. The company's top segment, Intelligent Cloud, generated $28.52 billion in revenue, up 19% but below the $28.68 billion consensus. Azure and other cloud services grew 29%, missing the 31% growth expected by analysts.
However, executives expressed optimism, predicting a cloud growth acceleration in the first half of 2025.
