Options Market Statistics: Palantir Shares Fall, Options Pop as Stock Downgraded to Sell Amid 'Unprecedented Generative AI Hype Cycle'
News Highlights
$Palantir (PLTR.US)$ shares fell by 6.12%, closing at $23.01. Its options trading volume was 0.53 million. Call contracts account for 64.6% of the total trading volume. The most traded calls are contracts of $25 strike price that expire on Mar. 28th. The total volume reaches 21,515 with an open interest of 17,495. The most traded puts are contracts of a $23 strike price that expires on Apr. 5th; the volume is 11,037 contracts with an open interest of 6,602.
An analyst downgraded data analytics software maker Palantir Technologies on Thursday on views its valuation is inflated amid investor buzz over generative artificial intelligence. Palantir stock fell solidly.
Brian White, analyst at Monness, Crespi, Hardt & Co., downgraded Palantir stock to sell from neutral. He set a price target of 20 on Palantir stock.
On the back of this unprecedented generative AI hype cycle, Palantir surged in 2023 and the stock's upward trajectory has continued in 2024, leaving the company with what we view as an egregiously rich valuation," he said in a report.
$AMC Entertainment (AMC.US)$ shares fell by 14.29%, closing at $3.72. Its options trading volume was 0.29 million. Call contracts account for 58.4% of the total trading volume. The most traded calls are contracts of $4.5 strike price that expire on Mar. 28th. The total volume reaches 18,354 with an open interest of 20,074. The most traded puts are contracts of a $4.5 strike price that expires on Apr. 12th; the volume is 2,899 contracts with an open interest of 699.
AMC Entertainment stock is back on the dilution train. The heavily indebted cinema chain and once-loved meme stock is heading to the market to sell another $250 million worth of shares in order to pay down its strangling debt load obtained during the heights of the covid pandemic.
$Intel (INTC.US)$ shares rose by 0.91%, closing at $44.17. Its options trading volume was 0.28 million. Call contracts account for 68.3% of the total trading volume. The most traded calls are contracts of $43 strike price that expire on Mar. 28th. The total volume reaches 4,802 with an open interest of 8,400. The most traded puts are contracts of a $41.5 strike price that expires on Mar. 28th; the volume is 6,038 contracts with an open interest of 4,719.
According to a note from one research firm this week, Intel stock could be on the verge of a notable upswing, with the possibility of a 20% to 30% increase, thanks to what they describe as 'significant' catalysts.
Lynx Equity anticipates two major catalysts for Intel. First, they expect Intel's April 2nd event, typically uneventful, to create buzz with the unveiling of its new reportable segments. The event is likely to include a reorganization of business groups and details on the allocation of funds from the CHIPs act, potentially clarifying Intel's financial outlook and 'smart capital' initiative. Second, they project the launch of Intel's Sierra Forest in early 2024, a server chip that has not yet excited investors due to lack of a compelling narrative, unlike $Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.US)$'s similar chip, Bergamo. Lynx Equity believes Sierra Forest has a specific AI application for Meta, and suggests it might ship as early as the second quarter.
Unusual Stock Options Activity
There was a noteworthy activity in $Lyft Inc (LYFT.US)$, where multiple puts have topped volume to open interest ranking. The highest volume over open interest ratio reaches 179.5x, with option volume of nearly 29,442 and open interest of 164.
