Amazon's market value surpassed $2 trillion on Wednesday for the first time in the company's history as its shares hit an all-time high during afternoon trading. With that result, Amazon has become the fifth publicly traded company in the world to pass the milestone. Amazon stock gained following a bullish call on its path to increased retail profitability by analysts at Bank of America.
The Seattle-based firm is facing stepped-up competition for digital sales from brick-and-mortar titans $Walmart(WMT.US$ and $Target(TGT.US$, as well as upstarts such as Temu and Shein. Meanwhile, the Amazon Web Services, or AWS, cloud business is battling $Microsoft(MSFT.US$ to be the leading cloud-platform for generative artificial intelligence. The so-called "Everything Store" operator also is staring down a major antitrust battle with the U.S. government.
$Walgreens Boots Alliance(WBA.US$ shares ended 22.16% lower. Its options trading volume was 0.46 million. Call contracts account for 48.7% of the total trading volume.The $15.5 puts expiring June 28 were traded most actively.
The stock slumped on the news the company slashed its profit guidance, the second time it has adjusted guidance downward this year. Amid the shift to downsize unprofitable parts of the business, including announcing additional store closures, Walgreens is also fighting a problem that other smaller pharmacies are facing — pricing pressures from prescription drugs.
$Palantir(PLTR.US$ shares ended 4.65% higher. Its options trading volume was 0.46 million. Call contracts account for 73.2% of the total trading volume.The $25 calls expiring June 28 were traded most actively.
Shares of Palantir are rising Thursday afternoon after the company announced a partnership with Voyager Space "to rapidly advance the space and defense technology sectors by integrating Palantir's cutting-edge AI tools across the Voyager enterprise," according to a Voyager press release.
