A comprehensive overview of the Singapore market globally.
When entering a local market, it is essential to have a basic understanding of the land.
Introduction to Singapore
In a nutshell: Singapore is a small place with a small population but high population density. The market is open, but the market capacity is limited and not fully competitive. It has political stability and a developed financial sector. It is a multicultural country with interconnectivity between the East and the West.
Singapore is a city-state located at the southern tip of Malaysia, separated from the Riau Islands of Indonesia by the Singapore Strait. It became independent from Malaysia and established the Republic of Singapore on August 9, 1965. At that time, Singapore was just a poor and desolate swampy land. The per capita GDP was only $428, but by 2023, the per capita GDP is $0.091 million, with a compound annual growth rate of 10%. It is truly a miracle.
Small population: Singapore has a population of 5.6 million, with about 4 million citizens. However, the population density reaches 8,634 per square kilometer, second only to Morocco and ranking second in the world.
Multicultural: Singapore's 4 million citizens are composed of Chinese, Malays, Indians, and other ethnic minorities, forming a multicultural society. Different ethnic groups coexist harmoniously, creating a diverse cultural society. There is also a wide variety of religions and beliefs. This cultural diversity is reflected not only in social life but also in food, arts, and festive celebrations.

(Tencent),Alibaba(Alibaba),Bank of China(Bank of China),海尔(Haier), Huawei, Apple,Google(Google)Facebook(Facebook)Amazon(Amazon)Microsoft(Microsoft), Chevron(Procter & Gamble(P&G), Pfizer(Pfizer)......
Based on the environmental description above, from an investment perspective:
Advantages: an open and efficient economic system, a good business environment, stable political situation, and highly developed financial markets.
Disadvantages: Singapore's market is relatively small, which means there are fewer opportunities for explosive growth of giant companies.
Compared with the global markets such as the Chinese market, $CSI 300 Index (000300.SH)$ American market, $SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY.US)$ and Japanese market, $Nikkei 225 (.N225.JP)$ etc., the Singapore market has its unique characteristics.
II. Overview of the Singapore market:
1. Represents the index STI
The most representative is the Straits Times Index (STI) in Singapore, abbreviated as STI. $FTSE Singapore Straits Time Index (.STI.SG)$
For a long time, the composition of the STI has been fixed at 30 stocks. The selection rule is mainly based on market capitalization, and then market capitalization weighting is applied. The total market capitalization of these 30 stocks accounts for about 30% of the total market capitalization of listed companies in Singapore.
Of course, if you buy the STI for the long term, the return on investment may not be high, so it is necessary to select high-quality stocks in the market.
2. Market Overview
Singapore has only one exchange, the Singapore Exchange Limited (SGX), abbreviated as SGX. $SGX (S68.SG)$
SGX itself is also a listed company, and its historical trend is shown in the chart below:
Large cap overview of the Singapore market.
There are a total of approximately 700 companies listed on the Singapore Exchange, with a total market capitalization of about 5 trillion. Two-thirds of the total market capitalization are from local Singapore companies, and one-third are from non-Singapore companies.
The bond market is also very mature. Singapore is one of the most developed bond markets in Asia. The proportion of domestic bonds is even higher, accounting for 80%. There are more than 3,000 listed debt securities that have been issued but not yet matured from 45 countries or regions, with a total issuance amount exceeding 1 trillion US dollars.

Fourth, what symbols are worth paying attention to?
What's worth paying attention to is more subjective. Here are a few companies I'm personally interested in.
Just a simple one-sentence explanation of why I'm interested. Analysis of individual stocks will be shared in separate longer articles in the future.
Singapore Exchange (Stock Code: S68):The only exchange in Singapore with high stability and low growth rate.
The past 10 years' return rate is about 150%, with a compound growth rate of about 10%. In the future, it is expected to benefit from the status of Singapore as a financial center, and the growth in the capital and financing sectors is likely to continue. However, if there is no breakthrough change in the capital side, it will also be difficult to attract large companies to list. In simple terms, the "pool" of Singapore is too small, which suppresses the scale and number of listed companies, and the trading volume cannot increase. Now the Singapore Exchange is also expanding its market nationwide, and the management's long-term perspective is commendable.
The performance of the exchange may not be particularly impressive, but it is indeed stable. If you are interested in this level of return rate, long-term holding is likely to have decent gains.
DBS Bank (Stock Code: DBS):The largest bank in Singapore with the highest investment in innovation and technological transformation. It has good asset quality and a low non-performing loan ratio. DBS Bank is known for its robust financial performance. Even in a situation of global economic uncertainty and market volatility, DBS is still able to maintain a good profitability and strong capital base. This stability makes it a safe choice for investors in the financial industry.
As a leading bank in Singapore and Southeast Asia, DBS Bank occupies an important position in the retail banking and corporate banking markets. It has a solid market share in Singapore and significant expansion in important markets such as Indonesia, India, and China.
With the rapid growth of wealth in the Asia-Pacific region, DBS's wealth management and private banking businesses have shown strong growth momentum. The expansion of the high net worth client base and the increasing demand for wealth management provide DBS with a stable and profitable source of income.

Singtel (Stock Code: Z74):Singapore's largest telecommunications company, holding a position in Singapore similar toChina Mobile. Its subsidiary NCS is the most powerful local software company in Singapore, and many of Singapore government's apps are developed by NCS. Singtel is also relatively stable, but with a very low growth rate. As mentioned earlier, as Singapore is small in scale and faces difficulties in technology innovation, Singtel also encounters similar challenges. In comparison, China Mobile's investments and developments show promising prospects.
Large cap overview of the Singapore market.
Sheng Siong Supermarket (stock code OV8) $Sheng Siong (OV8.SG)$You can find the "News" feature under the "Market"-"More" section. One of the two largest supermarket chains in Singapore. The largest is NTUC (supermarket: fairprice), followed by Sheng Siong. NTUC is a state-owned enterprise, and Singapore's sovereign wealth fund, Temasek Holdings, is a major shareholder. Unfortunately, it is not publicly listed and cannot be purchased.
The model of Sheng Siong is unique to Singapore, not quite suitable for elsewhere. As mentioned earlier, Singapore is a non-competitive market where everything is imported, there are few delivery services, service fees are high, and e-commerce is not well-developed. In addition, the government has transformed Singapore into a community model, where each community forms its own ecosystem. 70% of the houses are government-built HDB flats. In this unique environment, Sheng Siong has streamlined the scale of its stores to the extreme, offering mostly essential household goods and food that every household needs. It focuses on offering the best prices. Stores are located under HDB blocks everywhere on this small island, with nearly 100 outlets. People have become accustomed to buying groceries, cooking, and getting daily necessities downstairs. Based on Singapore's specific environment, Sheng Siong has created its unique ecosystem, establishing an unbeatable advantage.

Raffles Medical (stock code: BSL) $Raffles Medical (BSL.SG)$
This is also a feature of Singapore. The most advanced private hospital in Singapore. Singapore's private hospitals are not like those in Putian. They have good treatment and have recruited many good doctors. Rich people love to go to private hospitals, which have good medical standards (compared to local standards) and can enjoy hotel-like services.
CapitaLand Integrated Commercial Trust (CICT) $CapLand IntCom T (C38U.SG)$
Overview: CapitaLand Commercial Trust is the largest commercial real estate investment trust in Singapore, established in 2002. The trust invests in high-quality shopping malls and commercial properties in Singapore, with a strong asset portfolio that includes iconic landmarks such as Marina Bay Sands shopping mall and Tampines Mall.
Main Assets: CICT's main assets include large shopping malls, office buildings, and mixed-use commercial properties. These properties are widely distributed in Singapore's central business district and other major commercial areas, attracting a multitude of international and local retail brands and commercial tenants.
Prominent Properties
Mapletree Pan Asia Commercial Trust (MPACT) $Mapletree PanAsia Com Tr (N2IU.SG)$
Mapletree Commercial Trust focuses on real estate investment, including shopping centers, office buildings, and mixed-use commercial properties. MPACT's assets are mainly concentrated in Singapore, with multiple high-quality properties.
Major assets include VivoCity, one of the largest shopping centers in Singapore, as well as Mapletree Business City, Mapletree Anson, and other high-quality office buildings.
