Part of the Sydney Metro, which runs north of Sydney, has opened.

On August 19, the government of New South Wales (NSW), Australia, opened a section of the City and Southwest line, a new route of the Sydney Metro. The section spans a total of 15.5 kilometers from Chatswood Station in the northern part of Sydney, passing through the CBD (business district), to Sydenham Station in the southern part. It was originally scheduled to open on August 4, but due to a lack of approval from the National Rail Safety Regulator, the opening date was delayed by two weeks.

Sydney Metro is the first self-driving system in the country, operating at a frequency of one train every four minutes during peak hours. The City and Southwest line is a joint venture between Marubeni and others, called Northwest Rapid Transit (NRT), which has a public-private partnership (PPP) contract with the state government to design, construct, finance, operate, and maintain the rail system. According to the state government, the total cost of the line is estimated to be at least 20.5 billion Australian dollars (about 2 trillion 29.5 billion yen, with 1 Australian dollar approximately equal to 99 yen).
The commuting options connecting Sydney's northern suburbs and CBD are either by car or bus, crossing the Sydney Harbour Bridge over Sydney Harbour, or using the existing train network called Sydney Trains. During peak commuting hours, this area becomes the most congested in the city. Jo Haylen, the Minister for Transport for the state government, stated, "The opening of the metro this time will be a significant transformation for Sydney's public transportation system since the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It will double the railway transportation capacity across Sydney Harbour, relieve the burden on the existing railway network, and provide passengers with new transportation services."
In addition to these plans, there are two other metro lines under construction within the Sydney metropolitan area. One is the Western Sydney Airport line, which connects St Marys Station to the Western Sydney Airport via Bradfield Station over a distance of 24 kilometers. The total cost is estimated to be 13 billion Australian dollars, and it is scheduled to be completed in 2026. It should be noted that Bradfield Station is the pre-development area for the Western Sydney Airport City Development Plan led by the NSW state government, and the Western Sydney Airport is also scheduled to open in 2026. The other line is the Westmead Line, which connects Sydney CBD to Parramatta Station and then to Westmead Station. The total cost is 11 billion Australian dollars, and it is scheduled to be completed in 2032.
