REINVENTING A FORGOTTEN HERO?
Seeing the name "Talam" brought back memories of sitting at a dealing desk as a young stockbroker with this and its twin "Europlus" big volume, price breaking heros of the KLSE.
At one point in its history Talam Transform (then Corporation) Bhd was one of the largest property developers on the KLSE, delivering mass low cost housing in Selangor and had a huge landbank. With that Talam, under the late Tan Sri Chan Ah Chye, grew ambitiously taking on the West Coast Highway under Europlus but with that also was straddled with equally sizeable debts which dragged it all down during the Asian Financial Crisis in 1997.
Since then, its been "under the radar", unnoticed much like many other 1997 era heros. Much humbled, Talam is a shadow of its former glory largely forgotten. Without fanfare, debts were settled, landbank reduced and it quietly led a mundane existance.
The unexpected passing of Tan Sri Chan Ah Chye and these changes marks a generational change. Like the remake of MUI Group under second generation Andrew Khoo, transforming under new owners as seen with Taiping Consolidated (same era) into YTL Land & Development Bhd, or the passing of baton to professional management in others (the Public Bank the best example), sadly some of the names will fade into history.
Corporate Malaysia is always about reinvention. Lets see what the next "transformation" Talam will see?
