Review & Comparison of Moomoo NX - A significant upgrade.
Moomoo recently released their new Moomoo NX version in Download Moomoo SG: A Powerful, Fast And Stable Platform, which is more or less like a UI overhaul than an actual bunch of feature additions.
If anything it's lacking features of the original moomoo version but then again, it is still in beta.
Nonetheless, I'll walkthrough some key differences between the two, then we'll talk abt feature additions.
Key Differences (Non-Technical Features):
Main UI
Right, we'll first start off with the main UI and overlook, using the watchlist as our main panel.
Firstly, we notice how there is a lacking of Moomoo's signature black and orange color scheme, instead replaced with a more "smooth" and "light" shade of black, and basically no orange shown anywhere.
Color aside, we can straight away notice from the default candlesticks that its a slightly different color shade and alot of the UI elements are shifted around.
I think most of the elements are now much cleaner and less cluttered, especially the buttons on the menu up top, where they are now spaced quite a fair bit away from each other and the buttons are bigger throughout the whole UI.
We also notice that certain features such as the Paperfolio, Algo trading and Moo tabs dont exist as features on the new NX version, likely because they're not as important as other key features.
We can also see that the bottom part where there should be extra information and the capability to trade directly from the watchlist, do not exist and trading is instead replaced by a "Quick Trade" button as a temporary (hopefully) remedy.
Most importantly however, is that from a glance we can clearly see efforts to make all the UI elements more "modern" and give it a cleaner look, im personally a huge fan of this upgrade, but i do miss the orange/black color scheme for moomoo as its sort of its signature look, i feel that they will probably add it back in as an optional skin at some point though, cuz rn it looks eerily similar to webull's color scheme.
Note: Above Webull screenshot may not be updated as im not old enough to use all features of their platform (tfw ur old enough to start a family but not take loans. )
Also while we're at the topic of the Main UI/Stock view UI, I want to point out that alot of financial indicators and research features are missing.
If you're somebody who relies on these features frequently, they do not exist on the NX version yet, theres only two research tools as i've shown before, and the financial statements just like the original desktop version wont show any visual interpretations (no charts).
However, I do believe all of the Mobile's research features should probably be ported over to NX at some point, overtaking the original desktop version, preferably with the morningstar data and visual financial indicator charts given as those were really helpful.
Accounts Tab
Let's move on to the Accounts Tab, which you'll probably check quite often.
Honestly the accounts tab doesnt look like much has changed, it looks practically the same aside from the general UI differences and looking more clean/defined, but once again it lacks the whole "theme" of Moomoo with their orange/black scheme.
A slight issue is that your account ID is actually leaked in full in the old version, whereas in the new one its censored to just the few numbers, additionally a lot of the right side space on the new version is just empty and thus wasted, the old version uses up more of this space by default.
Markets/Index Tab
The entire look for the markets/indexes tab is essentially different, they do retain the same idea but the new version is a massive upgrade over the original version, with more detailed price data and just an overall more futuristic and helpful design.
Not to mention everything on the upper menu is extremely well laid out and looks clean.
Other than that I dont have much else to say, its a rather simple and helpful feature, nothing more nothing less.
News
Going with the theme of "features that give information", we'll take a look at the new UI for news releases and headlines.
The largest, most prominent differences is that instead of watchlist, headlines and latest being seperate tabs, theyre all just shown in the entire tab outright.
I think this was the best move as it allows us to see the headlines from a quick glance and click for a close-up view of the actual headline.
However, i have experienced that some headlines/articles will bug out and the Moomoo app will think you're not logged in and prompt another log in prompt, which can happen whilst trying any feature actually.
I do still think this is a good upgrade, but unfortunately it is still largely missing it's signature orange/black color scheme.
I also feel that the hot news section is a rlly nice added feature, and if you may or may not have noticed, on the top right you're actually able to search specific news/quotes, which while is a regular UI feature not exclusive to the News tab, is hard to find in the old version so its a welcomed QoL change.
Chat Functionality
I just wanted to quickly clear up some of the chat functionalities before going into the more technical, trade-related things as i know some of the moomoo event & promo group members care about this.
Firstly, both the new and old Moomoo versions are lacking the new server functionality, so im not going to nitpick on that. (It will likely come to NX as i heard new features r ported to NX and not the original version.)
For the main changes, the look is more minimalistic and fits the rest of the NX changes with being more neat and cleaner, but i feel like the left bar is literally too empty, it has one icon and thats the message icon.
Im thinking they plan on adding server icons to the left bar once they implement the server functionality but as of now it just looks so out of place and redundant.
Regardless, everything is cleaner and just looks better in general, not much else to add.
They should definitely add replies or editing messages/deleting into a destop QoL feature however......
Key Differences (Technical Features):
Trade Tab
Alright, lets go on to the technical features (actual trading related) changes for the NX version.
First off, let's take a look at the improved and visually appealing "trade" tab, which sort of allows you to place widgets here and there to customize your own trading dashboard.
Now, the previous Moomoo version also had the same trade tab but i found it too difficult to look at (visually unappealing), plus theres no actual way to trade other than the "quick trade" button now that trading directly from watchlist isnt a thing anymore .
I wont show any pictures of the old UI's trade tab, but it looks the same as this but the orange/black color scheme doesnt rlly fit well into this tab, and in general everything in the new UI just looks way better overall.
Anyways, heres a look at my dashboard setup for the trading tab, now i have a pretty big monitor size for a laptop, at 2560x1600, and this screenshot was taken with my office's larger monitor.....there isnt alot of space for you to work with for most people.
I feel like some elements by default are at a fixed size and should have some sort of element wrapping feature or font size changing feature to ensure that this trade tab is effective on smaller monitor sizes as well, but if you just want to place simple trades, this will do.
Nonetheless, you may have noticed some new options features that arent a part of the original desktop version.
Options Chain
To start off lets talk about the options chain, which is a feature that ill go through more than the actual trade window as tbh theres not much you can tweak on trade menus if you just trade stocks/etfs, the rest of the technical features are more for whats new in options as technical analysis (charting), stays unchanged.
I believe the options chain had somewhat of a larger change than most of the other features ported over from the Original desktop version, first we can see that instead of having seperate tabs, Options analysis and Rankings are now a part of the chain itself, which removes uncessary UI elements and clutter, and now we have ALOT of key information displayed on the chain itself, which were previously not there.
In a way its way more detailed, informative and just looks cleaner, if you do options quite frequently id advise you switch to the Moomoo NX version for the Options changes.
Not only that, but we now have the IV and associated Expected Move shown, this is something that i've always wanted as it gives you a great view of the anticipated price move during the period of an option, or a binary event like earnings call.
I've actually mentioned having this feature back when they were asking for options features and I mentioned how popular options platforms like Tastytrade has a feature like this.
Overall I think the new Options chain is just a massively good overhaul from the previous version, it is however not as good as the mobile version's option chain as our existing trades/positions dont appear on the chain itself, at least last I checked.
Previously I mentioned about how option analysis was moved to a much more convenient place, so let's take a look to see if anything's changed.
Now, I know that the two stocks I chose are completely different, but just looking at the UI difference I think you can see the differences, with the general look being more visually appealing in the NX version and Volatility analysis is actually shown here from the get go as it's definitely more important than the rest.
I believe the change in visuals, the overall UI design being cleaner and the change in priority of what data to show first is a really nice touch and I've found myself using this feature way more than I did in the past.
Conclusions & Closing Off
Now, that's about it for the technical features, just about everything else is the same as either the original desktop version or the mobile app.
However, I do want to point out some minor outlier features I've noticed so far.
When at the watchlist, its possible to right click and open this menu, which now has a "Clear Invalid Symbols" feature, I'm not sure if this existed before in the original version, but I liked the addition and the look of this menu is just really aesthetically pleasing for some reason.
I also want to show the "Funds" section of the accounts tab as I'm mainly a Fund investor, I really like this implementation as I literally dont need to open my phone to view my investments anymore.
A minor issue is that I can't view the graph performance of my mutual funds, it literally just appears as a blank space and thats just annoying, not like the original desktop version supported it either though.
Lastly, here's two cool features I thought would be nice for some people to know.
The Market Tab's Crypto and ETF section are really detailed and I think alot of people would find them useful.
That should conclude my review of the new NX version, I know most of you won't read this fully but I really enjoyed reviewing and using this new generation of Moomoo's desktop client, and I have to say im quite happy with the progress they're making, thanks for reading this too btw.
At least now we know our platform fees are going somewhere good!
(Now to just have them decrease option commissions )
