Russia's Lipetsk region has been hit by a “large-scale” drone attack, the governor said.

A fire broke out at a military airfield about 460 kilometers south of Moscow, and evacuation orders were issued to residents.

Russia has received a “large-scale attack” by Ukrainian drones and has begun evacuating people from parts of the western Lipetsk region, state governor Igor Artamonov said.

Governor Artamonov wrote on the messaging app “Telegram” early Friday morning and stated that Lipetsk “suffered a large-scale UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) attack.”

Afterwards, there was an explosion “far away from private buildings,” and it was reported that local power facilities were also damaged. At least 6 people are said to have been injured.

Immediately after that, the Russian state-run RIA Novosti News Agency and Tass reported that a fire broke out at a military airfield on the outskirts of Lipetsk, which has a population of about 0.5 million people.

Lipetsk is located about 460 kilometers (286 miles) south of Moscow and about 300 kilometers (190 miles) from the eastern border of Ukraine.

A state of emergency has been declared in Lipetsk city, and 4 villages have been evacuated.

Mr. Artamonov denied that the evacuation of the entire city was a “psychological warfare” operation by Ukraine on social media.

There was no communication from Kiev about the situation in Lipetsk.

The attack came after 1,000 Ukrainian troops supported by tanks and armored vehicles crossed the border on the 6th and then stated that Russia was engaged in heavy fighting in the Kursk region.

The Kursk attack appears to be the most significant attack within Russia since Moscow ordered an all-out invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
