Kursk Invasion
· Ukrainian military commander Oleksandr Shirsky said that the Kiev army has taken control of 74 settlements in Russia's Kursk region and is continuing to advance further, conquering 40 square kilometers (15 square miles) of territory in the past 24 hours.
· In Russia, Special Forces Commander Major General Apti Araudinov said that the Ukrainian military had stopped. The Ministry of Defense said Russian forces had repelled attacks on villages about 26 to 28 kilometers (16 to 17 miles) away from the border. Governor Alexei Smirnov of the Kursk region called on residents to show patience and mettle, and warned that “the crisis has not yet been overcome.”
・US President Joe Biden stated that the Ukrainian military's invasion of Russia “posed a real dilemma” for Russian President Vladimir Putin. Since Kiev began surprise attacks on 8/6, Mr. Biden made substantial comments for the first time and stated that he was receiving status reports every 4 to 5 hours. Officials emphasized that the US was not involved in planning or preparing the attack.
・Lithuanian Defense Minister Laurynas Kashunas said that Russia is moving troops from the Baltic enclave Kaliningrad to Kursk.
· Russia convened an informal meeting of the UN Security Council and criticized Ukraine's allies for not condemning the invasion of Kiev. “We do not recognize invaders as victims,” said Kremen Ponikval, a senior Slovenian diplomat, one of several directors who accused Russia of hypocrisy, double standards, and waste of board time. Moscow began a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and currently occupies approximately one-fifth of Ukraine's internationally recognized territory.
Fighting in Ukraine
・At least 1 person was killed and 2 were injured due to Russian bombardment in the Sumy region of Ukraine bordering Kursk. The military administration in the Sumy region announced that it had recorded 45 Russian military attacks on Tuesday, including guided bomb attacks, drone explosions, and artillery shelling.
・The Ukrainian General Staff said it is restricting the movement of civilians within the 20 km (12 mile) border zone of Sumy Oblast due to “intensification of hostilities” and the activities of Russian sabotage and reconnaissance groups in the region.
・In the Russian-occupied city of Lisichansk in eastern Ukraine, a bus was bombarded by the Ukrainian army, killing 2 people and injuring 30 people, Tass reported citing the story of a local official appointed by Russia.
· According to the Ukrainian military, the Russian army intensified attacks on the Pokrovsk front in eastern Ukraine. According to the General Staff, there were 52 battles within 24 hours in this region, and battles over one-third of the 1000 km long front have been reported.
・According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia fired 38 unmanned attack aircraft and 2 Iskander M ballistic missiles at Ukraine overnight. Of these, it is said that 30 aircraft were destroyed in 8 regions of Ukraine. It's not clear what happened to the weapons that weren't destroyed.
Politics and diplomacy
· Andriy Yermak, chief of staff to the Ukrainian president, said that Ukraine plans to hold a follow-up meeting to the peace summit held in Switzerland in June this month. The meeting will be held online, and it is said that the focus will be on energy security.
