Russia-Ukraine war: Major events of Day 921

Combat
- Russia attacked Kyiv in the early morning with dozens of drones and missiles, which coincided with the first day of school. At least three people were injured, and the entrance to the boiler room of Kyiv's water supply facility and the subway station, which was used as an air raid shelter, were damaged.
- Other regions also came under Russian airstrikes. The Ukrainian military announced that of the 35 missiles, 22 were destroyed above the capital and the states of Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Mykolaiv, and Zaporizhzhia, and 20 out of 23 attack drones were destroyed.
- Serhiy Lyovochkin, the governor of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, said that one person died and three were injured in the Russian missile attack on Dnipro. On the other hand, Oleh Synyehubov, the governor of Kharkiv Oblast, stated that four guided bombs from Russia hit a residential area, injuring at least 13 people.
- In the frontline of eastern Ukraine, intense fighting continues, and Russia claims to have captured the village of Skuchynske, which is a strategic part of the Pokrovsk district and is aimed at domination. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says Ukraine is facing difficulties in confronting the "most combative Russian brigade" on the eastern front, but Russia stated that it has not made any progress in the last two days.
- Russia has invaded 477 square kilometers (184 square miles) of Ukrainian territory in August, which is the largest monthly increase in Moscow since October 2022, as shown in the data provided by the War Research Institute and analyzed by AFP.
- Russian President Vladimir Putin, while visiting Russia's Tuva region, stated that the Russian military is reclaiming territory in the Kursk region "square kilometer by square kilometer" and that the invasion of the Kiev region on August 6 failed to prevent Russia's invasion of Ukraine's Donetsk region.
- Vyacheslav Gladkov, the governor of Russia's Belgorod region, stated that some kindergartens in the city of Belgorod near the Ukrainian border will be closed for one week and that some schools will conduct online classes in response to the destruction of childcare facilities due to Ukrainian attacks.
Politics and Diplomacy
- The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry criticized Mongolia for not arresting President Putin, who arrived in the country on Monday. The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for President Putin last year on charges of war crimes. The 124 member countries of the court have an obligation to arrest and transfer the president to The Hague for trial if he sets foot on their territory. Mongolia is a member of the ICC. Georgiy Tikh, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, stated that Mongolia's failure to detain President Putin is a "major blow to the International Criminal Court and the criminal justice system."
- Human rights organization Amnesty International stated that Mongolia must arrest President Putin and hand him over to the ICC. "Mongolia's international legal obligations are clear," said Altantuya Baldorj, Head of Amnesty International Mongolia.
- In a series of arrests related to corruption allegations in the Ministry of Defense, Russia has detained Major General Valery Mumindzhanov on suspicion of bribery. Investigators allege that the Major General received bribes in exchange for facilitating contracts between a private company that supplies military uniforms and the military. The Major General is the ninth senior military official to be arrested in the past few months on charges of fraud, bribery, and abuse of power.
- Zelensky stated that he will meet with Rafael Grossi, the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, in Kiev. The meeting will take place after Grossi's visit to the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant, which was occupied by the Russian military shortly after Moscow began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
President Zelensky said that western alliance countries of Ukraine should not only allow their own weapons to be used in attacks deep into Russian territory, but also supply long-range weapons to Kiev. After meeting with Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof in the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhia, President Zelensky said that Kiev is "more positive" about obtaining such permission.
The Romanian coalition government has approved a bill regarding the donation of the Patriot missile defense system to Ukraine. Bucharest stated in June that it will donate one of the two operational Patriot systems to Ukraine, on the condition that the alliance country replaces it with a similar air defense system. The parliament now needs to vote on the bill.
