GraphCore, which was acquired by the SoftBank Group, is developing an “intelligence processing unit (IPU),” which is a semiconductor processor for AI, and its manufacture is mainly outsourced to Taiwan's TSMC. A bow IPU adopting 3D wafer on wafer technology was developed in cooperation with TSMC. As a result, it is said that performance improvements of up to 40% and power efficiency improvements of 16% were achieved compared to previous-generation processors. Since the GC200, which is the latest IPU, is manufactured using TSMC's 7nm process, there is no need for TSMC's cutting-edge process. If this is the case, there seems to be room for TSMC, but negotiations are in the middle of a bush.
