TD, Royal Bank of Canada Mute Declines in Barrick, Newmont, Sending TSX Higher
Canadian stocks gained Monday as the rally in banks offset the declines in energy and metals and mining.
The $S&P/TSX Composite Index(.SPTSX.CA$ closed 0.3% higher at 22,126.13 while the blue-chip $S&P/TSX 60 Index(.TX60.CA$rose 0.2% to 1,318.71.
$Barrick Gold Corp(ABX.CA$ and $Newmont Corp(NGT.CA$ slipped as gold futures declined, muddying the financial prospects for the biggest producers of the precious metal. $Gold Futures(DEC4)(GCmain.US$ lost 1.3% to $2,366.80.
Crude oil futures slip as optimism over talks on a potential end to the Gaza conflict and the storm in the Gulf of Mexico known as Beryl weakened, easing supply concerns. $Enbridge Inc(ENB.CA$ slid 0.7%.
