Tesla Model 3/Y Top 3 for China's July BEV Wholesale

1) Tesla Model Y is the July best selling BEV (Battery electric vehicle) in China and Tesla Model 3 is ranked 3rd best selling BEV. Note that Tesla has beaten BYD in BEV delivery for H1 2024 (Q1+Q2). Read here:

2) Teslarati is reporting using NEV (New Energy Vehicles) a term used in China to include PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle). Strictly speaking PHEV is still considered an ICE (internal combustion engine) car as it is powered by petrol. About 50% of BYD's EV sales are PHEV and it is predominantly in China.

3) While Tesla critics may easily translate July’s NEV rankings as a sign that the Elon Musk-led electric vehicle maker is declining, it should be noted that Tesla China is the only foreign automaker to rank this high in the country’s NEV segment. The fact that BYD, Geely, Li Auto, and Changan all sell hybrids (PHEV) makes Tesla China’s 5.3% NEV market share in July especially impressive.

4) Despite someone reporting Xpeng and NIO "impressive" EV sales in July, they are not in the ranking. I have said previously that other Chinese EV brands are also reporting records in July sales. Note that Xpeng and NIO are still making EVs at a loss.
