New Tesla car malfunctions, Tesla stock falls 2% after hours.
$Tesla (TSLA.US)$In the USA, many brand new Tesla cars are experiencing automatic driving computer malfunctions, resulting in serious problems. Insiders at Tesla stated that this malfunction has overwhelmed Tesla's after-sales service.
Over the past few weeks, Electrek has received reports from several new Tesla owners stating that their new cars are experiencing computer malfunctions. The issue is related to Tesla's new HW4 (sometimes referred to as AI4) in-vehicle automatic driving computer, which has experienced short circuits. Internally at Tesla, some also refer to the new version as AI4.1. While the cause is still under investigation, one insider told Electrek that one possible reason is low-voltage battery issues.camerasA short circuit in the computer caused during the calibration process.
Tesla owners reported that after driving a brand new car for only tens to hundreds of miles, computer malfunctions occurred. Several functions relying on this computer cannot work properly, including active safety features, cameras, and even GPS, navigation, and range estimation.
Internal sources at Tesla revealed to Electrek that this issue has a wide impact, involving cars produced with new computer models in the past few months. Two insiders stated that Tesla has received numerous complaints about this problem, but has not yet issued any relevant service bulletins.
An insider stated that Tesla instructed the aftersales department to downplay safety concerns related to this issue to prevent consumers from believing that their brand new vehicles are undrivable. Tesla's aftersales department is overwhelmed by this problem, with repair service appointments scheduled into next year. This issue arose at the end of this year, just as Tesla is striving to deliver a record number of cars, attempting to prevent the annual delivery volume from experiencing its first decline in a decade.
It is currently unclear whether Tesla has reported this issue to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the USA. According to regulations, a malfunction in the rearview camera violates US federal safety regulations and should be subject to mandatory recall. Currently, Tesla's main solution under consideration is to replace the computer, but the company is also contemplating pushing software patches to temporarily alleviate the problem.
