Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory started trial production seven months after the groundbreaking ceremony.

The electric vehicle giant Tesla (Nasdaq: TSLA) announced on Tuesday that the Megapack factory in Shanghai officially began trial production before starting mass production early next year.
What happened: Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory is the first factory outside of America specialized in the production of energy storage products. Currently, Tesla's dedicated factory for manufacturing Megapacks is only in one location, which is in Lathrop, California. The Lathrop factory has the capacity to produce 40 GWh of energy storage products.
Tesla officially started the construction of the Shanghai Gigafactory in May, and it took just 7 months from the start of construction to the commencement of trial production.
Formal mass production is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2025.
Why is it important: The Megapack is a powerful battery manufactured by the company, used in conjunction with the home battery Powerwall. Each Megapack unit can store over 3.9 megawatt-hours of energy and can supply power to 3,600 households for one hour on average.
In the three months up to the end of September, Tesla's revenue from energy generation and storage reached $2376 million, showing a 52% growth compared to the same period last year. The energy business achieved a record gross margin of 30.5% and set new records in the deployment of Powerwall products.
Tesla also has another factory in China, Gigafactory Shanghai, where the company manufactures its popular Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV. The company started construction of the factory in January 2019 and began operations by the end of the year.
SpaceX kicked off operations post-Christmas with a double launch and aims for 134 missions in 2024.
