Tesla shows off Dry Cathode 4680 Cell used in Cybertruck

$Tesla(TSLA.US)$ $BYD COMPANY(01211.HK)$ $NIO Inc(NIO.US)$ $XPeng(XPEV.US)$ The article reported that a Tesla Senior Manufacturing Engineer for 4680 cell development has shared a photo of the first-ever Dry Cathode Cybertruck. The vehicle is equipped with Tesla’s in-house dry cathode 4680 cells (DC 4680 cell), which have long been highly anticipated by the electric vehicle community.
Based on Sawyer Merritt on x.com posted, here are 4 advantages if Tesla can produce DC cells at scale:
• Will help Tesla reduce their own costs between 15%-30%, saving a ton of money.
• The dry method uses less space than the wet method which Tesla and other EV makers use currently. It will allow Tesla to build smaller and more efficient factories.
• Dry coating process requires fewer preparation steps and equipment, and could result in a 10x smaller factory footprint reduction, and a 10x energy reduction.
• Could result in higher density batteries, and potentially more range, but that remains to be seen.
• Better for the environment.
My Take: Various battery companies have been working on the dry method for a while, but all of them have only achieved it at lab or pilot scale. LG Energy Solution is aiming to commercial -cialize the dry method by 2028. Tesla could be the first to produce at scale.
