Tesla's strategy is simpler and cheaper, but it has two fatal weaknesses, industry executives, autonomous vehicle experts, and one Tesla engineer told Reuters. Tesla systems that do not have multi-layered technology such as those adopted by other companies in the same industry struggle more with so-called “edge cases,” that is, rare driving scenarios where autonomous driving systems and their human engineers struggle to predict.
Tesla engineers said that end-to-end AI technology is a “black box,” and “when it malfunctions and causes an accident, it is almost impossible to confirm what went wrong.” Since such faults cannot be accurately identified, it becomes difficult to protect oneself from such faults, he said.
