Tesla's Japanese subsidiary, leading the global electric vehicle shift, changed its name from "Tesla Motors Japan" to "Tesla Japan." They hosted the promotional event "Tesla Energy Tech Talk," which is globally operated, for the first time in Japan. Here is a report from the second day of the event held in Nagoya.
Expanding business beyond the scope of auto manufacturers
On May 21, 2024, Tesla's Japanese subsidiary, Tesla Motors Japan LLC, announced that it has changed its name from "Tesla Motors Japan LLC" to "Tesla Japan LLC" effective May 20. The change is clear at a glance. The term "Motors," which means "automobiles," has been removed from the company name.
In the United States, the headquarters has already changed its name from Tesla Motors, Inc. to "Tesla, Inc." as of February 1, 2017. Removing "Motors" from the name is a clear indication of Tesla's mission to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy, not just an ordinary auto manufacturer.
At Tesla, they have long been offering their own products such as the "Super Charger" network for rapid charging stations for their EVs, as well as the "Wall Connector" for home and destination charging. They have also expanded their product range to include rechargeable battery products such as the home battery "Powerwall" and the industrial battery "Megapack." Although not yet available in Japan, they also have their own solar photovoltaic panels named "Solar Roof" in their lineup, and are working on developing battery control programs while focusing on Virtual Power Plant (VPP) projects around the world.
In other words, Tesla is not just an automobile manufacturer, but a company that strategically expands into energy-related businesses as a 'core' to achieve their mission. As reported, despite the media's unfavorable views on EVs and questions like 'Is the EV Shift at a standstill?' even in the financial results for the first quarter of 2024, Tesla's energy-related business has been steadily growing.
