$Tesla (TSLA.US)$ this shows the stupidity that exists within analysts and the games that are played
Bank of America downgraded Tesla this morning to a neutral from a buy
and in the same breath the same analyst raises the Target price on a stock that he just downgraded to a neutral, the new Target price is now $490 the old Target price was $400.
does anybody else see a problem with this?
you're going to downgrade a stock from a buy to a neutral and you're going to raise the Target price 22 percent
if this doesn't prove analysts suck I don't know what will

  • LittleSoldier : 😂😂😂😂

  • SeaBird0110 : Agreed

  • Himzzi : what kind of circus is going on here

  • BelleWeather : It’s “neutral” in the sense that his target matches average benchmark returns over the time frame in question….So merely stating “market return expected in the coming twelve months.”

In this instance. Though one must understand the goals of sell side and buy side et al , over all, when interpreting such things.

Edit to add: I should have ended my first paragraph with “…or whatever time frame or in light of whichever catalyst(s) specified and my market expectations and benchmark.” Also, some analysts consider IV in predictions such that by definition, the expected percent return of a very volatile ticker like TSLA and a very stable company like PG may differ from one another in the context of overall market beta and return (return on risk and etc) - someone very keen on options pricing and volatility might do so in light of what they are trying to achieve/hired to do/planning to do themselves etc ad nauseum or one pointing out that VOO is commensurate but with lower “risk.”

  • 10baggerbamm OP BelleWeather : that means he believes the market's going to be up 22% if that's how you explain it and if you look at his other stellar recommendations they're nowhere is near that (a 22 percent return in 2025) so I don't think your explanation holds water

  • Ben the Oracle : This is why I say do your own research. Analysts are complete fools . There are just a handful you can take seriously. Most are completely useless and you cannot make investment decision based on anything they say.

  • 小屁孩玩股 : If you want to see how much the Tesla stock price was when he bought it before, if it was 250 at that time, his target price is 400, then it has a 60% increase, so buy it. Now it has been downgraded to Neutral, priced at 410, with a target price of 480, so there is only around 20% increase, so there is no problem.

  • 10baggerbamm OP Ben the Oracle : they actually paid by the percent of increase from when they put a buy recommendation on a stock.
so in this case my opinion is he had to downgrade the stock raise the Target price and now in the coming days mark my words this analyst will initiate coverage with an accumulate or a buy on Tesla and then he gets credit going forward the next 12 months based off of when he put a buy on the stock how much it went up . their compensation plan their bonuses are tied to that

  • Ginvest : I am still holding the Target bag from the ER day, loss (156-139)x1000 because the analyst’s BUY ratings. (I blame my own stupidity)

  • Zamm : Not only TSLA, as long the counters predicted to be gainers in 2025, "they" start to playing game. Weired things are, revise rank, downgrade, Hold rating etc. started to mark to their "victim". Thus, investors must be smart enough to "ride the wave" with them. Hurrahh..!
