The likelihood and timing of another pandemic are difficult to predict with precision, but experts generally agree that it’s not a matter of if another pandemic will happen, but when.
$Pfizer (PFE.US)$ Disease forecasters are convinced there’s a 27% chance of another COVID-like pandemic within 10 years—but experts believe there’s a silver bulletStatistics Say Large Pandemics Are More Likely Than We Thought Most people are likely to experience an extreme pandemic like COVID-19 in their lifetime, a new study shows.
Estimates suggest that there is a significant probability of experiencing another pandemic in the coming years. Based on statistical analyses, the likelihood of a pandemic similar to COVID-19 occurring within the next decade is around 27%, primarily driven by factors like increased human encroachment on wildlife habitats, global travel, and climate change. Disease forecasters point out that novel pathogens are emerging more frequently due to these dynamics, heightening the overall risk.
Research from Duke University estimates a 2% yearly chance of a pandemic as severe as COVID-19, equating to roughly a 38% chance of experiencing such an event within a lifetime if born around 2000. This rising probability underscores the need for enhanced global health preparedness and swift vaccine development, potentially reducing the risk by over 70% if vaccines can be deployed within 100 days of an outbreak .
