The thing that worries me about Starbucks…

The thing that worries me about Starbucks, and the new CEO’s turnaround attempt, is that its not like the old Starbucks crowd is just out there roaming around in the wilderness without a place to go….most of them who didn’t go back to their local coffee house chains are at Panera Bread and seem to be happy there. Bringing Starbucks back to its peak won’t just be a matter of dropping a few new limited edition flavors or some reward discounts in an app, contrasted against local chains that are still limited to paper coupons. They are going up against a chain that arguably has a better app and reward system than they do, a more chill environment that allows more people to leisurely hang out longer, and local chains that have evolved to the point of launching their own fledgling apps and high-caffeine iced coffees. Meanwhile, Starbucks has a lot of locations that were opened up during the former CEO’s tenure, that are relatively small and geared towards carryout and drive-thru. In many of those stores, there isn’t room for that many separate groups of people to hang out at the same time…
Part of me would really like to jump onboard Starbucks, but when I do a SWOT analysis, if Panera was ever to go public, it could easily steal some of the oxygen out of the room (and then there’s also a threat to coffee in general, but thats a different matter). So, for now, I’m going to stick with Texas Roadhouse, CAVA, and Chipotle (I’m giving the latter 6 more months to come up with a limited-time item campaign that outclasses the competition, as they haven’t had a winner since the Chicken Pastor).
