Learning investing online means your heroes are from the West.
Charlie Munger, Joel Greenblatt, and Peter Lynch are inevitable names you come across.
As a Malaysian, I naturally look for Malaysian success stories.
In Malaysia and Asia, there are many.
Cheah Cheng Hye, Tan Teng Boo, Tong Kooi Ong, and many more.
There's nothing wrong with that, but these people have succeeded in Asia. It's a comfort zone, so to speak. Take nothing away from their achievements.
However, I've always wondered if any Malaysians have made investing breakthroughs in the West, especially the US.
Introducing Tan Soo Chuen.
Tan, a Harvard and Oxford graduate, grew his fund - Discrene Group - from USD 100m to 2b in 14 years.
Phenomenal.
Anyway, here are 3 things that stood out to me about him.
