October 4, 2024, 2:54 PM GMT+9 (excerpt)
Strikes that have been ongoing at ports on the US East Coast and Gulf of Mexico ended on the 3rd following a preliminary agreement reached in labor-management negotiations regarding wage increases. While ports are reopening, it is expected to take time for the backlog of cargo to be cleared.
According to Everstream Analytics, as of 4:00 pm Eastern Time on the 3rd (5:00 am Japan Time on the 4th), there were at least 54 container ships stranded due to the impact of the strike.
The International Longshoremen's Association (ILA), which employs about 45,000 dock workers in the United States, and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX), an employer group, announced on the 3rd that they had reached a provisional agreement on wage increases. The strike, which had entered its third day, immediately ended. Learn more
Following a much earlier agreement than expected and a forecasted retreat in fare increases, maritime shipping stocks in Asia were broadly sold off on the 4th.
