Ponchiyo's Profile
A popular YouTuber with over 400,000 subscribers who is an individual investor in his 20s
I started investing as soon as I became a member of society, and while working for a company, I also tried side jobs such as blogging and YouTube
The target asset of 70 million yen was achieved, and FIRE was realized in 2022/3
――How was your life after being FIRED? Has the way you use your time in a day changed?
Ponchiyo:Since I left the company, my life has really become easier. I am now able to exercise, and I am now able to live a healthy and cultural life (laughs)
I get up early in the morning, so I wake up at 5:30 and run. I'm running a marathon now, so I usually run from 6 to 7 o'clock. From around 8:30, I work on days when I have work such as video editing, etc., and I often finish around 13:00, so I'm in a daze in the afternoon (laughs). There are days when I work, though. Also, it's a routine of running again at night.
――How did the way you think about investing changed after FIRE was launched?
Ponchiyo:As for investing, rather than trying to trade now,Let's increase unearned incomeI'm going with that idea. Buying high-dividend ETFs has increased in order to eliminate the trouble of selecting stocks. When buying ETFs, the US market is the main market, and when buying high-dividend stocks individually, Japanese stocks are the main focus. Basically, there are many long-term holdings, and short-term trading is also done occasionally, but the shortest is about 1 week of trading.
――While the emphasis is on dividends, you try not to take too much risk, right?
Ponchiyo:I think the risk tolerance is very high, but it's a situation where there's no need to take that much risk.
If you have only about 20 million yen of money, no income as a member of society, and you are in a situation where you have to earn money by investing, you probably need to take risks, but now there is some revenue from YouTube, and assets are about 0.1 billion yen or less, so there is no need to take a big risk. We haven't cut down our assets either.
――How much do you watch the market every day?
Ponchiyo:I haven't done it in such a short time, so I check it 3 to 4 times a day in my spare time. This is because it is a portfolio where there is no need to monitor what is going on with the stock holdings.
There are times when positions are changed when settlement comes out, but other than that, I don't often buy and sell frequently on a regular basis. When I'm making stock analysis videos, I often switch when I think this stock is good too.
Our investment motto is not to accumulate stress.Probably, when I was an office worker, I watched stock price movements all the time in the bathroom, etc., so I spent a lot of time watching the market. I'm not an office worker now, so I can check the market at any time, but on the contrary, if I concentrate only on investing and watch the market all the time, it becomes difficult, so I try not to look at that much.
――When do you check stock related news and information?
Ponchiyo:Rather than taking the timing yourself, it always flows in without permission on Twitter etc. Also,Notification function such as an appThere are also things like that. At 5:30 in the morning, we first check how US stocks were. At that time, important news comes up with notifications without permission. I've been watching it in the morning.
US economic indicators are examined in detail when they are posted on YouTube. Since Japanese stocks are not published, there are almost no economic indicators of Japan, but individual financial results of Japan have been confirmed.
――Do you have any mental control tips to keep investing?
Ponchiyo:I think it's better to keep a distance from investing.I also check the state of the market every day, but I try to look at it separately from my own world. If you look at the market and get upset, I think you should not open the securities account page for 1 month.
However, the assumption is that you buy a brand that can do that. I'm probably in a position where I don't feel stressed even if I'm told to take my hands off stocks for 1 month now, so it's totally fine. This is because they are buying something that says, “If this stock were to crash for 1 month, it would recover in 2 or 3 years.”
――What stocks are you currently investing in?
Ponchiyo:The current portfolio is 15% for Japanese stocks, 70% for US stocks, and the remaining 15% is cashRight.
What are individual stocks in the US $NVIDIA (NVDA.US)$ $Tesla (TSLA.US)$ $Vanguard High Dividend Yield ETF (VYM.US)$ $Home Depot (HD.US)$, and later $UnitedHealth (UNH.US)$We own such things. Individual stocks in the US are still the main force, and we are trying to gradually transfer profits obtained from capital gains of such investors to stocks where income gains can be expected.
Right now, I only buy stocks that I can hold on for the rest of my life.I don't think it's necessary to go out of your way to take on the challenge and have extremely small stocks. For example, before, I bought a small-cap stock called Align Technology for orthodontics and held it for about 2 years, and as a result, it increased several times, but since the period of poor performance of small-cap stocks lasts a long time, I think I don't need to buy them anymore.
――In the current situation where the depreciation of the yen has progressed, is it better to watch how new investments are being made in the US? What do you think about investing in US bonds?
Ponchiyo:I think the yen will appreciate next year, but since the yield on bonds is high, I personally think it's okay to buy them. As for US stocks, if they have something more interesting than bonds, I think it's okay to buy them.
I don't have US bonds right now, but I think I “can” buy them. When making a new investment in US stocks, it's probably not enough to wait for the yen to appreciate, but I think it's better to assume that the yen will appreciate. However, even if the yen appreciates, it is about 1 dollar = around 140 to 135 yen, and there is no image that it will return to the level of 110 yen.
As for US stocks, I think there is a high possibility that a major crash will occur when the Fed cuts interest rates. Historically, there has been a big shock every time interest rates are cut, so I think there may be a major crash within 2 to 3 years. However, I wonder what it would be like to wait 2 to 3 years and not invest.I think next year will still be fine.
――What investments do you recommend to make now?
Ponchiyo:In my case, I want to increase my unearned income, so I buy high-dividend stocks, but since the purpose of investment differs from person to person, it is difficult to unequivocally recommend it. I think you should make an investment that suits you.
What are the correct answers to how to choose investment destinations and investment methods
I think so. First,You should try various things and find an investment that suits youI think so. I also tried Forex and short-term trading, and I didn't think it was right for me. As a result, it was found that holding it on a weekly basis had a higher win rate and was less stressful.
