Trade the moves in the U.S. market ahead of November U.S. Elections
• The presidential election in the U.S. poses to be one of the most important events of the year for global markets. Volatility for global markets is likely to be heightened surrounding the election period and is likely to increase sharply just before the election.
• The volatility index is often referred to as the “fear index”. According to a news article, there is an inverse relationship between the S&P 500 and the volatility index. As volatility increases, Wall Street declines and vice versa. Recently, volatility has been slightly declining. (IG, 24 Oct)
• With our call and put warrants over the U.S. indices, investors may profit from any upward or downward movements in the market. Call warrants move in tandem with the underlying, while put warrants move in the opposite direction, increasing in value as the underlying drops, and vice versa. Put warrants can also be used to hedge against any adverse market movements.
• On Thursday, Tesla rallied over 21% on strong earnings, which lifted both the S&P 500 (+0.2%) and Nasdaq-100 (+0.8%) higher, snapping three days of losses for the S&P. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones (-0.3%) extended losses to a fourth day, falling over 140 points, dragged lower by shares of IBM which fell over 6% as the group’s consulting revenue missed estimates.
