PHOENIX (AZFamily/AP) —Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will speak Friday “about the present historical moment and his path forward,” his campaign announced Wednesday, with CNN reporting that he’s expected to end his campaign and support Republican nominee Donald Trump.
His address is set for 11 a.m. at a location that has not yet been announced. Kennedy’s event will be streamed on his X account and other social media channels.
A source told CNN people close to Kennedy are in talks with Trump’s team to endorse the former president and then appear at Trump’s rally on Friday night in Glendale.
A spokesperson for Kennedy, Stefanie Spear, declined to say whether he planned to drop out or why he chose Arizona for his speech.
The speech will come days after Kennedy’s running mate, Nicole Shanahan, said in a podcast there may be a move to “join forces” with Trump to limit the election chance of Vice President Kamala Harris, whose Democratic convention winds up Thursday night in Chicago.
Trump will host his rally with Turning Point Action at the Desert Diamond Arena near Westgate at 91st and Glendale avenues.
He is also expected to visit Sierra Vista and the Arizona-Mexico border.
Trump said he’s open to having Kennedy possibly be in his administration if elected if he dropped out and endorsed Trump.
“He’s a brilliant guy. He’s a very smart guy. I’ve known him for a very long time,” Trump told CNN’s Kristen Holmes. “I didn’t know he was thinking about getting out, but if he is thinking about getting out, certainly I’d be open to it.”
News of a public news conference came around the same time that Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes announced that Kennedy had met the signature requirement to file as an independent presidential candidate.
