Tuesday Market Pulls Back After Nvidia All Time High | Wall Street Today
The market fell Tuesday, following chip stocks lower after Nvidia led the way to all-time highs Monday night. The stock price spike marked Cheif Jensen Huang's new product showcase at the Consumer Electronics Showcase Las Vagas Keynote, where he showed off a robot future and affordable graphics cards.
Just past 4 pm ET the $S&P 500 Index (.SPX.US)$ fell 1.11%, the $Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI.US)$ was falling 0.42%, and the $Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC.US)$ fell 1.8%.
MACRO
In macroeconomic releases, JOLTS job openings came in at 8M, about 300k more than estimated.
ISM Non-Manufacturing PMI climbed to 54.1, which is above estimates. This means input prices grew for nonmanufacturing firms tracked by ISM in the past month.
SECTORS
Crypto led the way for declining investment themes Tuesday, down 8% overall following the decline in Bitcoin below $100k.
Elsewhere in the economy, $Crude Oil Futures(MAR5) (CLmain.US)$ continued to climb slightly, at $74/barrel. Gold and silver climbed, and treasuries climbed.
MOOVERS
$Moderna (MRNA.US)$ meanwhile led the S&P 500 gainers, up 11% after the first death of a patient who contracted H5N1 bird flu in the U.S. Moderna is one of the companies developing an mRNA vaccine for the disease.
$Palantir (PLTR.US)$ was leading declines on the S&P 500, down 7% to $69/share. Shares continued to fall, trading down 5% on Monday Morgan Stanley analysts gave the stock an Underweight rating and set a price target of $60.
$FuboTV (FUBO.US)$ rallied more than 250% Monday after the company agreed to combine its business with Hulu + Live TV business, owned by $Disney (DIS.US)$. Tuesday, the stock was still up 10% intraday.
$Carvana (CVNA.US)$ stock turned around Tuesday, up 7.5% after analysts Brad Erickson and Khadijah Gibson upgraded shares of the used-car retailer to Outperform from Sector. The stock fell after a Jan. 2 short report that said insiders sold shares.
