Turning data centres green

How many data centers utilize solar energy, particularly under the Corporate Green Power Programme (CGPP)?
1. Solarvest - Solarvest recently announced that they have signed a CGPA under the Corporate Green Power Programme (CGPP) with a leading global data center. However, they have not disclosed the data center’s name.
2. UEM Group Berhad subsidiary Cenergi SEA Berhad has inked a 21-year renewable energy Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA) with Nasdaq and Hong Kong Exchange-listed data centre developer and operator GDS. Cenergi said the agreement positions GDS among the first cohort of green power offtakers in Malaysia under the Corporate Green Power Programme (CGPP)
3. APAC data center firm AirTrunk has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to procure renewable energy in Malaysia. The company announced it had signed a virtual PPA (vPPA) with renewable energy developer, ib vogt, under Malaysia’s Corporate Green Power Programme (CGPP).

Will there be more data centers in Malaysia turning to green energy sources, particularly solar energy?
Yes, data center industry investors should align with the demands and responsibilities of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To further support the industry in adopting sustainable methods, Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) has also intensified efforts to promote the use of renewable energy in the country. the Ministry of Trade and Investment Department (MITI) is set to announce energy and water efficient standards for data centres operating in Malaysia next month.
Given that the Corporate Green Power Programme (CGPP) has a quota limit of 800 MW, how can data centers transition to green energy?
The Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS), organized by Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), will commence this September to enhance corporate companies’ access to green electricity supply. Under CRESS, the open grid access concept will create a platform for third parties to either supply (sell) or obtain (buy) electricity, with a specified system access charge.
