amid continued attacks by extremist groups supported by Iran on US forces,

the United States and Iraq have reached a interim agreement to completely withdraw the US-led coalition forces from Iraq by the end of 2026, according to Reuters communication reported on Friday.Amidst ongoing attacks by Iranian-supported extremists on US forces, the United States and Iraq have reached a provisional agreement to completely withdraw the US-led coalition forces from Iraq by the end of 2026,as reported by Reuters communication on Friday.
According to multiple sources cited by Reuters, the plan assumes that hundreds of soldiers will withdraw by September 2025 and complete the withdrawal by the end of 2026.Approval from both capitals is required for the agreement. However, the details have been broadly agreed upon.
"The agreement has been reached, it's only a matter of when to announce it," admitted a senior US official. The final announcement has been delayed due to regional tensions related to Israel's Gaza war..
The discussions between Baghdad and Washington, which began in January, have focused on the transition to a new advisory relationship that allows some US forces to remain in Iraq for security cooperation even after the withdrawal.
Farrhad Al-Arardin, Iraq's Foreign Advisor to the Prime Minister, stated that the technical discussions have concluded and a path to a "new level" of bilateral relations has been opened.
This agreement was reached amid ongoing attacks by Iraqi armed groups supported by Iran against US forces, resulting in casualties and retaliatory attacks.
Last month, multiple attacks on US military bases in Iraq and Syria resulted in several American injuries. On August 5, two rockets hit the Ain al-Asad Air Base in Iraq, injuring 7 Americans. On August 9, a drone attack on the Karab al-Jil Base in Hasakah, Syria, also caused 'light injuries' to several Americans and coalition members.
Currently, the US military has about 2,500 troops stationed in Iraq and 900 in Syria, originally deployed to fight against the Islamic State. The withdrawal will begin with the withdrawal of troops from the main bases in Anbar and Baghdad by 2025.The remaining final units will remain stationed in Erbil until the end of 2026.andThis withdrawal marks a significant shift in Washington's military posture, with US authorities acknowledging that the presence in Iraq is not only to counter the Islamic State but also to monitor Iran's influence in the region.Said.
A phased withdrawal is seen as politically beneficial to Iraq's Prime Minister Mohammed Seer Al-Sudani. This is because it aligns with Iraq's actions to balance between the USA and Iran while addressing ongoing instability. However, it may also represent a victory for Iran and its proxy forces in Arab countries that have long sought complete withdrawal of the USA and coalition forces from both Iraq and Syria.
