The White House announced that american President Joe Biden has approved 567 million dollars in new defense assistance to Taiwan.
In a brief statement released on Sunday, the White House stated that Biden has delegated to the Secretary of State the authority to instruct the Department of Defense to withdraw up to 567 million dollars for support to Taiwan, including defense supplies, services, military education, and training.
No further details have been disclosed.
While the United States does not have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, it is a crucial international supporter and arms supplier for Taipei. China has repeatedly demanded Washington to stop arms sales to Taipei, which it claims as part of its territory.
As China increases military and political pressure on Taiwan, the United States approved billions of dollars in military aid in April. Beijing accuses Washington of interfering in its 'domestic affairs' by supporting the democratic island.
Taipei is dissatisfied with delays in the delivery of American weapons, including upgraded F-14 fighter jets.
