The US Department of Justice announced criminal charges against Hamas leaders in the terrorist incident that occurred in southern Israel on October 7.
The names of 6 defendants (3 of whom died) are listed in the complaint released on Tuesday.
The defendants who died were Ismail Haneh, the former political director of Hamas who was assassinated in Tehran in July; Mohammed Daif, who died in an air strike on Gaza by Israel in July; and Marwan Issa, who announced that Israel had killed them in the March attack.
The surviving defendants are the new Hamas leader Yahya Shinwar, who seems to be in Gaza, Khaled Meshal, who is based in Doha and leads the group's diaspora office, and Ali Baraka, a Hamas executive based in Lebanon.
“These defendants are armed with arms, political support, funding, and support (from Hezbollah) from the Iranian government and have led Hamas efforts to destroy the Israeli nation and kill civilians to support its aims,” US Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement.
The US accusations were made while the White House said it was working out a new cease-fire and prisoner of war deal plan with both the Egyptian and Qatar governments in order to put an end to the fighting in Gaza.
