Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, while visiting the United States on the 23rd, at an event in New York, reiterated the view that the foundation of international order is threatened around the world, including by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, highlighting the continued need for US involvement and leadership in East Asia and globally.
Prime Minister emphasized his efforts during his term to strengthen the Japan-US alliance, enhance Japan's defense capabilities, and defend an open and free international order based on the rule of law. He stressed that the world to be passed on to the next generation should be a "safe and peaceful society based on freedom and democracy," and pointed out that "since World War II, the United States has played a leading role in building such a society." He stated, "Today, East Asia and other countries around the world require US engagement and leadership. This is also in the interest of the United States."
He also called for investment in Japan, quoting Captain Kirk's famous line from the popular American SF series Star Trek, saying, "Let's boldly invest in Japan like no one has ever done before."
Prime Minister Kishida is scheduled to attend this week's United Nations General Assembly.
