――What was the reason for Tabazo-san to start investing?
Tapa Elephant: The reason I started investing was when I changed jobs. It was 23 years ago in 2000. I intended to work at that workplace for 20 or 30 years, but I was able to predict my lifetime annual income to some extent, and I felt that there was a quantitative limit. In the qualitative part, although there is a possibility that social positions can be improved,I decided to start investing to expand my possibilities
My grandfather and father were investing, so I was originally interested in investing. So, when I tried out stock investment simulations, good results came out, so I decided to start investing.
The first stock investment I started was Japanese stocks. My father also invested exclusively in Japanese stocks, and at that time it was quite difficult to access US stocks, and it was an age where it was easier for domestic people to obtain information.
――When did you start investing in US stocks? What do you think are the major differences between US stocks and Japanese stocks?
Tapa Elephant: Investments in US stocks began in 2010. The direct reason was fluctuations in exchange rates. In my memory, around 2010, I think it was around 1 dollar = 80 yen, but since I thought the purchasing power parity at that time was reasonable to be around 1 dollar = 100 yen, I thought it would be possible to make a profit of about 20% from the exchange rate alone, making an investment more difficult to lose.
The situation of catching up with changes in industrial structure is different between Japan and the United StatesI think so. From a global perspective, the industrial structure is changing, especially in developed countries, and I think it is American companies that are responding well to these changes. Also, it is attractive that there are many sectors where it is easy to add value to US stocks. egUS stocks are the most promising investment destinations for IT, healthcare, etc.It seems that it is.
While searching for investment destinations with the most investment efficiency, it can be said that as a result, there was a shift to US stocks.
――In general, how do you gather information on investment destinations, including Japanese stocks and US stocks?
Tapa Elephant: Previously, the internet, SNS, etc. weren't that developed, so I used to refer to financial statements, but it wasn't easy to gather information comprehensively.
Regarding US stocks, gathering information on US stocks became relatively easy in the 2010s. I think the increase in investment in US stocks was also affected by the introduction in 2016 of specific accounts that do not require tax returns in principle. The trading environment for those trading in the US stock market has been improved, and there is no need to calculate dividends or exchange rates. In the past, it took time and effort to calculate this information, but now transactions can be carried out more easily by using specific accounts.
Since transactions began to be carried out through securities companies, it has become possible to gather information on financial statements and fundamentals of American companies. Ultimately, however, it is necessary to gather information through IR (Investor Relations). I think it takes a reasonable amount of man-hours to decipher IR information.
――Why were you able to start investing in US stocks when it was difficult to gather information at first?
Tapa Elephant: You may think of it as difficult when it comes to investing in US stocks, but what is difficult when choosing an investment destination for stock investment is the micro one, that is, individual stock investment decisions. However,Thinking about investment destinations from an area is simple and fairly easy. For example, information such as GDP forecasts and population trend predictions is pretty unmistakable, isn't it?
My shift to investing in US stocks began when I first thought about what areas, such as GDP and EPS, are likely to grow as areas where I should invest. Based on that information, we purchased from indices such as the US, North America, and All Country. Of course, buying individual stocks is effective in order to obtain large returns,At that time, it is still more accurate if you are aware of the area you should invest inIt's a fact.
――What was your best investment up to now?
Tapa Elephant: I'm talking about return rates and amounts, but after all, the best return rate was financial stocks during the 2003 financial crisis. At that time, the investment amount was only a few million yen, so the profit amount is small, but since it has been many times the investment amount, it has become the source of capital up until now.
In terms of foreword, I think it's time for the coronavirus shock. Profits of over 100 million dollars have been made. Prior to that, it took nearly 20 years to obtain an investment return of 100 million dollars, but since the scale of the investment increased, we were able to obtain a large profit amount efficiently in a relatively short period of time.
At the time of COVID-19, we traded three times with funds of about 250 million yen. I first invested in the US stock index, sold it in about 1 to 2 months, and made a profit of about 10 million yen. After that, I bought Alibaba stocks that I thought were undervalued, sold out in August 2021, and then returned to the index again. Alibaba stocks fell drastically after that, so I think it would have been dangerous if they held them for a long period of time.
Since the scale of investment has increased recently,The index is relatively important in that it is possible to make highly safe investments. I invested in Alibaba stocks, but I feel that the phase of taking risks with individual stocks is over.
I always, including the indexI make a purchase by deciding whether the stock price is reasonable from my own perspective. Alibaba stock was purchased after determining that the undervaluation was remarkable compared to Alibaba's growth potential at the time and stock prices of other companies in the same industry. However, it dropped a lot after that, so I thought it was a fine line after all.
Successful and failed investment experiences so far
_______________________________________
――Have any investments failed so far?
Tapa Elephant: Actually, we haven't made any losses since 2016.
What failed in 2016 was buying shares of a company called “Kinder Morgan,” which is engaged in businesses such as oil pipelines. Stock prices have been cut in half due to the fall in crude oil prices. Even if crude oil prices fell, there was still interest in the pipeline, so there was logic that business performance would not deteriorate and dividends would be difficult to reduce, but in reality this was not the case. That was a huge failure, but if you take risks, there will always be failures, so I don't think it can be helped.
Also, there have been failures with Japanese stocks. There were stocks I was buying because they were undervalued on an EPS basis, but at that time it was an age where MSCB (CB with amended clauses) etc. were rampant, stocks were diluted, and the story changed all at once, and it failed. In short,There is such a risk for companies with weak financesI think that's it.
――Have you experienced changes in the way you think about investment in Tabazo-san?
Tapa Elephant: There are times when the investment phase changes within yourself. For example, in 2010, due to exchange rate fluctuations, attention began to be paid to US stocks. Also, since 2017, when the company was launched, it has also been possible to receive loans and invest in hard assets. Also, since the time of COVID-19, we began investing in indices in large quantities. Until then, the index had only been about accumulating money.
Like thisChanges in the investment phase are largely due to changes in the amount of fundsThat's it. For example, even if you can earn only 3% with funds of 1 billion yen, it will be 30 million yen per year. It has finally come to be understood that investors who have increased their capital scale will invest in Nikkei Stock Average futures.
The reason I started FIRE and my future life plan
_______________________________________

――There are many people who are longing for FIRE, but what was the reason that Mr. Tapazo left the company?
Tapa Elephant: The number of meetings and documents has increased, so I'm starting to think it's time to retire (laughs). I was 43 years old.
Once I was able to work, I got bored with my work. When I couldn't work, I had a lot of fun at work, and I did sharp things. However, after about 10 years, I was able to work on my own, and once I had a position, I realized that I was on the side that held back people who did sharp things the other way around. I had a feeling that it was different from my original life. I felt like I couldn't envision a future where I would spend nearly 20 more years working on meetings, documents, and coordination.
――When you left the company, didn't you think about your asset balance or how many hundred million yen would be needed over the next few years?
Tapa Elephant: I thought about that too. At that time, we had financial assets in the first half of 100 million, and we invested 100 million yen in solar power generation in 2017, so if we repaid the remaining solar power generation debt,I was able to calculate that an annual income of just over 10 million yen would last for 20 years. Calculation that you can get about 5 million yen by taking home even if you haven't repaid the remaining debtIt was.
――How are you making plans for your future life?
Tapa Elephant: First, I was able to achieve FIRE, and then I did what I wanted to do, but there are parts where I've done quite a bit. I would like to spend about a year thinking about what to do after this.
In private, I've been doing missions one by one per year for 3 years since last year. As a final mission, I myself am thinking of changing my home next year. I'm also considering moving overseas, such as Dubai, where the corporate tax rate is low.
