[Weekly Syrup] CPI not too bad. Wait, what to buy?
Hey mooers!
July's U.S. CPI annual increase of 2.9% fell short of the 3.0% forecast and marked a 40-month low. Core CPI matched the 3.2% prediction, a slight decrease from 3.3%, and hit a 39-month record low.
The U.S. CPI for July dipped below expectations, suggesting a persistent but resilient inflation, reflective of an active economy yet overshadowed by recession fears. Market consensus sees a Federal Reserve rate cut in September as likely, with debates ongoing over the extent—50 or 25 basis points. Economic recession concerns linger, influencing rate cut deliberations.

But before other recaps, let's look at something different:
What's Moo'ed?
"What's Moo'ed" is a space that captures fun, newsworthy, jaw-dropping and sometimes confusing (lmao) news clips for mooers so that you know this is a colorful world (or a weird and speechless one).
1) Back to school=back to debt
With the upcoming school year, 34% of Canadian parents are preparing to buy school supplies, feeling stressed about costs, with a majority expecting to spend the same as before but fewer willing to spend more, according to a Retail Council of Canada survey.
Clearly, some parents well understand that the best way to save is not to let their children go back to school at all.

2) Man's favorate
Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov extended an invitation to Tesla CEO Elon Musk to visit Russia following a video of Kadyrov driving a Tesla Cybertruck equipped with a machine gun. What a chance to extend Musk's business to military. We will finally see more ceasefires in future wars, as both sides need to charge their "Cybertank".

3) Stay strong, grass. I'm gonna cut some people
In Canada, a recall has been issued for four DeWalt lawn mower models due to a risk of laceration injuries from water entering the handles, affecting 9,630 units sold between February and July 2024. However, the real risk might be a drunk grandpa who insists on mowing the lawn.

4) Dream came true
A homeowner has described the “hilarious” moment when she found a flock of sheep walking around on her roof. This person surely has great mind power. Simply by counting sheep before sleeping, she can summon real ones. Maybe next time she can try thinking about money before sleep.
Okay, let's dive back to the syrup:
U.S. Retail revival?
Economic data serves as a navigational tool for investors, and the unexpected 1.0% rise in U.S. retail sales for July has eased some fears of an economic slump. This increase, significantly higher than the anticipated 0.3% and a turnaround from the previous month's -0.2%, prompts inquiry into the rebound's causes.
Contributing factors include June's weak performance setting a low starting point, a robust 3.6% recovery in auto sales boosted by holiday promotions and a rejuvenated real estate market influenced by falling mortgage rates. Read more>>
If we look at the bigger picture, worldwide stock markets experienced a sharp decline that ignited concerns over a potential economic recession and an impending bear market at the beginning of August. At the same time, the bond market saw a quiet rally, with the $iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT.US)$ securing eight consecutive days of gains by the 5th of August. Read more>>

Regarding CPI and bigger economy, let's see what mooers are talking about:
Stocks ended Wednesday’s session on a higher note as we got yet another soft inflation data.

The latest CPI showed that the US inflation falling is falling, which gives market and the Federal Reserve a further boost for a rate cut in Sep.

The carpet is laid out nicely for the Fed

Meanwhile, S&P 500 has recovered and recouped all the losses from its 5th Aug’s sell off.
so at least my consistent posts on this forum , have had a pretty good strike rate ( right now its 100% - that probably wont last)
here is my hypothesis ,2 major triggers for an nvidia rally
1) now with cpi, ppi , employment data out of the way - bond yields become less attractive as fed is likely to cut 25 BPS
2) pre nvidia earnings - you already heard from the hyperscalers about the AI investment , this company is one of those generational company - if the guidance is good and earnings are brilliant - dont be surprised with targets of 175 to 200
so where will the money go ? yes a little bit to the iwm , but most of it goes to where the growrh is … broadly dont expect these levels again … unless something dramatically different happens
if nvidia is trading at 180 , you would think 130- 140 is a good deal!
Some mooers already get their earnings boost up because of Treasury Bond ETFs
$iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT.US)$ CPI God don't fail me now! With any luck, I'm gonna roll up these put options and tp.

When we look ahead: Big Five earnings to come
The Canadian Big Five Banks are expected to report a slight rise in fiscal Q3 earnings, with an average EPS growth of about 5%, though $Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS.CA)$ may face a setback from greater loan-loss provisions. Revenues are anticipated to grow by 4% on average, supported by steady net interest margins despite weak loan expansion. $Royal Bank of Canada (RY.CA)$ , in particular, is likely to gain from its robust capital markets business through higher fee income.
