[Weekly Syrup] Rates and Tesla are down. But "earnings" are up now.
On June 5th, the central bank initiated a shift in monetary policy by trimming the overnight lending rate from 5% to 4.75%, reversing the trend of rate increases that started in March 2022. Then, on July 23, amidst a dip in Canada's inflation to 2.7% in June, the Bank of Canada further reduced the rate to 4.5%, marking the second cut of the year.
Tiff Macklem, the Governor of the Bank of Canada, hinted on Wednesday that if inflation trends align with projections, we might see a continuation of rate reductions.

But before other recaps, let's look at something different:
What's Moo'ed?
"What's Moo'ed" is a space that captures fun, newsworthy, jaw-dropping and sometimes confusing (lmao) news clips for mooers so that you know this is a colorful world (or a weird and speechless one).
1) Break a leg!
An Australian surfer, aged 23, fended off a brutal attack by a great white shark which resulted in the loss of his leg on Tuesday. Following the incident, the surfer's leg was discovered on the beach, and medical professionals are currently assessing the possibility of reattaching the detached limb. I guess it was not seasoned properly. You will get 1 star on Google by the shark.

2) Say cheese!
Paris has welcomed the opening of France's inaugural cheese museum, coinciding with the Olympic Games. Its founder, Pierre Brisson, created it with a purpose of keeping the art of cheesemaking alive in France. But this should not be a problem. You go to tourist attractions and listen when visitors take pictures. They are "cheesemaking" all the time.
3) I only date PhDs, cuz they have higher degrees
Robert Downey Jr. is set to re-enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a new metallic guise, taking on the character of Doctor Doom. Now who can say PhDs are poor and nerdy.
Okay, let's dive back to the syrup:
Tesla's diving surprised us all?
In Q2 2024, $Tesla(TSLA.US)$'s revenue slightly rose by 2% to $25.5 billion, primarily fueled by its auto segment at 78%, with its energy storage and other ventures contributing 12% and 10%, respectively. However, operational costs surged by 39% to $2.97 billion, dragging EBITDA down by 21% to $3.67 billion and slicing net income by nearly half to $1.48 billion, with EPS falling short at $0.52 against the anticipated $0.58.
The sharp 45% fall in net income is largely attributed to escalated operating expenses, especially in AI research and development—a strategic investment for Tesla's future expansion.
The increase in AI-related spending is a critical factor in Tesla's lower net profits, even as vehicle deliveries remain robust. Tesla's strategic bets on AI, including the development of its new platform, Robotaxi rollouts, and Optimus robot enhancements, signal that AI expenses may continue to climb.

On the AI front, Tesla disclosed that the Optimus robot is now active in battery operations at a Tesla factory. Moreover, the expansion of Tesla's Texas mega-factory is on the brink of completion, poised to host the company's most substantial H100 chip cluster to date. Read more>>
