Weekly Syrup: TD's fine is not fine. Buy the dip or TBD?
Hey mooers!
$The Toronto-Dominion Bank (TD.CA)$ recently resolved a money laundering suit by agreeing to a $3.09 billion settlement, including fines to the US Treasury and Justice Department and a guilty plea for breaching the Bank Secrecy Act.
The bank had provisions in place, mitigating financial risks. However, the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency imposed an asset cap on TD's U.S. retail operations, covering 30% of its total assets. This cap restricts TD's growth in loans and market share in the U.S., potentially decreasing its 2025 EPS by 25-30 basis points. Consequently, $Royal Bank of Canada (RY.CA)$ lowered its target price for TD to C$82, due to the cap's impact on growth and strategic options. Read more>>

What's Moo'ed?
"What's Moo'ed" is a space that captures fun, newsworthy, jaw-dropping and sometimes confusing (lmao) news clips for mooers so that you know this is a colorful world (or a weird and speechless one).
1. He really wants to put himself in their shoes
A man in Greece received a one-month suspended prison sentence for breaking into his neighbors' homes at night to smell their shoes. Clearly he needs to work harder to be a qualified foot fetish: A qulified one either work as a podiatrist or work in Foot Locker.

2. I'm on a sea diet. When I see food, I eat it.
New data shows that due to guilt, Gen Z workers often skip their midday meal. According to ezCater's 2024 Lunch Report, 47% of Gen Zers miss lunch at least twice a week. Apart from the fact that some of them want to keep slim, others might do this as food at workplace tastes worse and worse now.

3. Love the way you lie
After researching on Reddit, Saf, a Russian "world citizen" for six years, identified the top three unconventional methods to fight jet lag: gaslighting yourself into thinking that you slept enough, clenching your toes, and using a foot hammock on flights. Well, I guess some bosses would be very good at dealing with jet lag if gaslighting is one of the keys.

Okay, let's dive back to the syrup:
Ay-oh! AI! Are we in the new era?
On Thursday, October 17, $Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM.US)$, the worldwide leader in semiconductor manufacturing, released its financial results for the third quarter of 2024. The company reported a robust performance for the quarter, with revenue, net profit, and gross margin all surpassing analysts' forecasts. The gross margin notably rebounded to approximately 58%, well above the anticipated 54.8%.
Projections for the upcoming quarter are also optimistic, with expected revenue and gross margins significantly outstripping market forecasts, suggesting that the demand for AI continues to be strong. Read more>>

China's asset market: the new outlook looks good?
A range of policy initiatives launched in China recently have led to improvements in economic indicators in September. Notably, the introduction of the "two new" policies significantly enhanced the consumption of major items such as automobiles, home appliances, and furniture, marking the first yearly growth in manufacturing investment in six months.
Furthermore, a surge in special bond issuance in September contributed to heightened growth in infrastructure investment. Additionally, adjustments to real estate control policies across various regions have resulted in a continued reduction in the decline of nationwide commercial housing sales. Read more>>

The stock price of $Aritzia Inc (ATZ.CA)$ has recently dropped mainly because of its recent dimming management outlook. Is it a good opportunity to buy in? Let us investigate the Aritzia store in Calgary (Chinook center, a CF core retail mall) since the training of employees and the development of proudct lines have largely prepared for the year end events.
(Note from Moomoo CA: it's quite rare to see such a detailed field trip. This is a highly recommended reading!)

  • 102362254 : Semiconductors, AI, and China are deeply interconnected in global politics. Taiwan, especially TSMC, plays a key role in semiconductor production, vital for AI. While China seeks AI independence, it still rely on Taiwanese tech, highlighting the importance of semiconductors. The ongoing U.S - China tech war, with export controls and sanctions, adds to the complications for these industries

  • CNNT : Technology like semiconductors and AI that drive innovation and computing efficiency will definitely be in high demand to meet the current and future needs. But I'm reluctant to go for volatile, over-valued, over-hyped stocks and speculation-fueled stocks, as I don't want my blood pressure to yoyo along with them. I prefer to search for fairly valued and lower profile companies that already have track records and invest in these.

As for TD, well, this predicament is hard to solve in the short term, esp. since 35% of their business is from the US. Time to diversify geographically? I hope so.

China....I don't feel like I know the market enough to dive in. There is definitely a long term as China will be one of the biggest beneficiaries of global power decentralisation from the US. ETFs will be a good starting point.

  • BearWithTheBull : TD: Total Disruption can only be resolved by shaking the bad apples out of the tree!  Deep dive investigate to reveal and remove corrupt individuals, at all levels, whom are complicit or involved in money laundering and other illegal activity.  A relationship between clients and banks depends heavily, if not entirely, on honesty and trust.  Corrupt individuals need to find more meaning to their lives than their insatiable greed for more money!

  • mr_cashcow : Semiconductor and AI have benefited greatly in the AI  race among the tech companies building their LLM and I have also made some sweet sweet cash from it so I hope the trend will continue[undefined]

  • Andrew0904 : I have confidence in TD. After all, TD is one of the pillars of Canadian financial institutions. Other than being fined, the other aspects are pretty good. In a few months, people will forget about being fined, and stock prices will rise, probably not as fast as before.
