The 'PayPal mafia'
Sacks, 52, is a venture capitalist and part of Silicon Valley’s “PayPal Mafia.” He first made his name in the technology industry during a stint as the chief operating officer of PayPal, the payments company whose founders in the late 1990s included billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk and investor Peter Thiel. PayPal was acquired by$eBay (EBAY.US)$in 2002.
Sacks is also a former chief executive of software company Zenefits and founded Yammer, a social network for enterprise users, which was bought by$Microsoft (MSFT.US)$.
Additionally, Sacks is also the co-founder of venture capital firm Craft Ventures LLC, and through his firm has backed crypto firms Lightning Labs, BitGo, and Bitwise, as well as AI startups Horizon3.ai and Glue AI.
Here are the companies that Craft Ventures has invested in and are publicly listed. Since the election, these companies have all recorded impressive gains:$Palantir (PLTR.US)$has risen over 84%,$Affirm Holdings (AFRM.US)$has increased by more than 64%,$Reddit (RDDT.US)$has nearly reached a 50% increase, and$Warby Parker (WRBY.US)$has gone up by more than 35%. Sacks was an early evangelist of cryptocurrencies, telling CNBC in a 2017 interview that he believed the rise of bitcoin, the world's largest cryptocurrency, was revolutionizing the internet.
"It feels like we are witnessing the birth of a new kind of web. Some people have called it the decentralized web or the internet of money," he said. The new post is expected to help spearhead the crypto industry deregulation Trump promised on the campaign trail.
