$Palantir (PLTR.US)$, $Strategy (MSTR.US)$, and $Axon Enterprise (AXON.US)$ are set to join the Nasdaq 100 Index on Monday, Dec. 23, replacing $Super Micro Computer (SMCI.US)$, $Moderna (MRNA.US)$, and $Illumina (ILMN.US)$, as part of a reconstitution of the index, the Nasdaq said Friday.
What Investors Should Know About the New Constituents of the Nasdaq 100 Index?
The Nasdaq 100, which contains the 100 largest non-financial sector companies in the Nasdaq Composite Index, is reconstituted annually in December and rebalanced quarterly to weight its constituents by market capitalization.
$Palantir (PLTR.US)$'s stock has soared this year on the back of growing demand for its AI offerings. Its inclusion in the Nasdaq 100 also follows a strategic move to the Nasdaq from the New York Stock Exchange last month to become eligible.
A Nasdaq-100 index membership means mutual funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and other financial products based on this index will have to buy shares of Palantir. This increased demand should exert at least some upward pressure on the stock price. Membership in any well-known stock index also increases a company's visibility. Greater awareness of Palantir will widen the pool of potential investors in its stock.
Shares of $Strategy (MSTR.US)$ have surged along with the price of $Bitcoin (BTC.CC)$ in the wake of Donald Trump’s reelection, with the President-elect saying he wants to make the U.S. the "crypto capital of the planet."
$Super Micro Computer (SMCI.US)$ has been removed from the NASDAQ 100 index components this time. The stock has experienced a volatile few months, rocked by concerns about allegations of accounting manipulation and delinquent disclosures. Through Friday’s close, the stock was up nearly 30% this year—though well off 2024 highs.
