Though many person dont understand the marketing expenses that they did, but investor should be aware that shopee target market is mid to low income class citizen (300-400 usd per month income), this particular target market is easily attracted with “social influencer”, hence this gigantic marketing expenses most likely is spent on this activity to attract those infleuncer coming in.
Salmon Klein : nice view!! thanks for sharing.
TheReal财神爷 : no not true at all. if you have 500k marketing budget, you can give 50k people 10 dollars off their products.
This is what Lazada is doing - offering cheaper products, little to no marketing. and I think they're killing shopee.
This is the first time shopee didn't make money this quarter
D454 OP : Well in indonesia specifically only got 2 players, tokopedia and shopee, this is a typical duopoly business, market share of lazada is super small <10% compare with tokopedia and shopee both (30-40%), even with the annual funding of 2B each year, they can only grab 10% market share.
Lazada GMV annually expected arnd 20B$ USD,
That’s literally 20days of 11-11 shopee.
Therefore I would argue that lazada is not the main competitor, without baba money they are dying business, maybe BABA alr pour the whole market cap of SEA to Lazada and see where they are now.
Not mentioning the deep relation with the whole govt between tokopedia and shopee.
Shopee and Tokopedia built the whole logistic, local seller community in indonesia and huge dev center in ID, you can see all the news abt it.
Eventually I would say there will only be Tokopedia and Shopee if tiktok not entered.
Lazada has been in ID for 10Y, and cannot see any huge presence in ID.
If you go to jkt next time, can see all the “green” and “orange” jacket all around the road, It best to visit each local region to understand the business.
This goes the same with in TH, MY, TW, etc. Except BR lol, merc seems super strong there.
paladinsir : Shopee has more products than Lazada. So sometimes no choice have to buy on Shopee.
However, for products that are available on both platforms, Lazada may be cheaper because the coupons discount are automatically added at checkout while for Shopee, you have to manually claim coupons from platform, shop and claim deduction from Shopee coins. Because of this, it is more common to forget to claim discount coupons or have Shopee coins expire than to have Lazada points expire. I don’t know if this is a strategy to save on subsidies.
One thing I noticed is Shopee delivery is marginally better.
I am not too sure about the investment in live streaming, which create impulsive buys from low prices. This also creates a high percentage of returned/refunded products because of the impulse. I prefer they invest in logistics and distribution centers and higher priced high quality items since their commissions is a percentage of the item price sold.
