　　The author Joseph Scriven (Joseph Scriven 1819-1886), was born in Ireland, and his father was a colonel in the Royal Navy. In his early years, he wanted to be a soldier. He entered the military academy, but he struggled because of poor health. He graduated from the University of Dublin in 1842. On the eve of his wedding, his fiancee accidentally fell into the water and drowned. At the time, he was saddened by his friend Jesus. When he was 25, he sadly left his verdant hometown and went to Canada to coach. After a few years, he fell in love again, but while preparing for the wedding, his fiancee suddenly became ill. Since then, he has been alone all his life, devoting his life, wealth, and time to the Lord to guide his future. Only the Lord is his closest friend. He is proud and helpful. He often helps the poor and the widowed. He often carries a saw and volunteered on the streets for the poor, disabled, or widows. In the harsh winter, he shared his clothes and food with the poor and lived a simple life on his own.
　　In 1855, he wrote this poem from his most painful and sad experience. In 1857, his mother was seriously ill in England, so he sent this poem to comfort her when he didn't want to visit her. One time later, when he became ill himself, a friend visited him, saw a draft of this poem at his bedside, and after reading it curiously asked him if he was the author? “The Lord and I wrote this poem together,” he said. It was an unfortunate coincidence that he accidentally topped Lake Ontario in 1886.
　　This poem was included in the English Holy Poetry Collection in 1865. In 1875, Ira D. Sankey (see p. 13) incorporated it into the American “Gospel Holy Poems.” Although Scott wrote only one hymn, he has been a Christian favorite for over 100 years.
　　The composer of this poem is Charles C. Converse (1832-1918). He is an American. He studied in Europe in his early years. After returning to the US, he specialized in law, but he has a broader interest in music and philosophy. He wrote many songs, but the most popular one was this simple sacred song written in 1870.
