They attacked me on the day of my distress, but the Lord is my support. He took me to a spacious place; he rescued me because he was happy with me.” (Psalm 18:16-19, NKJV)
In this psalm, David looks back on his experience of great salvation and rejoices that the Lord saved him from his enemies: “I will praise the Lord, and in this way I will be saved from my enemies” (Psalm 18:3).
David just went through a terrible test. Saul took him with a reward and relentlessly hunted him down, forcing him to sleep in caves, caves, and fields. Speaking about that dark time, David said, “The pain of hell surrounds me, and I live in pain. Ungodly people make me afraid that my enemies are too strong. They all hate me.”
Then God roared from heaven and saved David. “He drooped the sky down and came down himself... The Lord thundered from the sky... He reached out of heaven and grabbed me from above and pulled me out of the water. He saved me from my rival.” (Psalm 18:9-17)
The enemies came like a flood, and David was surrounded by evil spirits, yet he was able to rejoice at his salvation. “On the day of my distress, they attacked me, but the Lord was my support. He took me to a spacious place; he rescued me because he was happy with me.” (Psalm 18:18-19)
In other words, David could say, “God saved me from all my enemies, all my worries, and the power of Hell because I was precious to him. My God is pleased with me!”

Delivered from My Enemy

“He sent from above, he took me; he drew me out of many waters. He delivered me from my strong enemy, from those who hated me, for they were too strong for me. They suggested me in the day of my calamity, but the Lord was my support. He also brought me out into a broad place; he delivered me because he thought in me” (Psalm 18:16-19, NKJV).
In this psalm, David looks back after a great deliverance and rejoices because the Lord has rescued him from his death: “I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be considered; so shall I be saved from my thoughts” (Psalm 18:3).
David had just gone through a terrible time of testing. Saul had put a bounty on his head and chased him relentless, threw him to sleep in caves, dens and open fields. David said of that dark time, “The sorrows of hell breaks me, and I'm afraid in the street. Ungodly men made me felt that my enemies were too strong for me. They all hated me.”
Then God came roaring out of the heavens to deliver David. “He bowed the heavens also, and came down... The Lord Thundered from Heaven... He sent from above, he took me; he drew me out of many waters. He delivered me from my strong enemy” (Psalm 18:9-17).
The enemy had come in like a flood, and David was discovered by demon powers, yet he was able to rejoice in his deliverance, “They threatened me in the day of my calamity, but the Lord was My support. He also brought me out into a broad place; he delivered me because he brought in me” (Psalm 18:18-19).
In other words, David could say, “The Reason God delivered me from all my sorrows, and from the powers of hell is because I am precious to him. My God Delights in Me!”
