August 30, 2024
Taiwan's Minister of Economic Affairs, Guo Zhihui, expressed the view on the 30th that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (TSMC), the world's largest contract manufacturer of semiconductors, is considering the construction of a third plant in Japan. He made the remarks in an interview with Kyodo News at a semiconductor-themed conference held in Tokyo. The plant will focus on advanced semiconductors, with construction expected to take place after 2030. He avoided disclosing the specific location of the plant.
TSMC plans to start mass production at its first plant in Kumamoto Prefecture by the end of the year, and aims to start operations at its second plant in 2027. Kumamoto Governor Keiichi Kimura visited TSMC's headquarters in Hsinchu City, Taiwan this month with the aim of attracting the construction of a third plant.
Mr. Guo explained, "I personally don't know if it's Kumamoto Prefecture." (Kyodo)
